Report: Olympus high-end SLR to debut Oct 17

Stephen Shankland, CNET News.com  |  Sep 10, 2007

Sony, Nikon, Canon and Panasonic have unveiled a gaggle of new SLRs, but Olympus has yet to show off its promised top-end model, at least to most of the world. According to DPreview this week, though, the unveiling will take place October 17.

"We have just received official word that Olympus will reveal the successor to their top-of-the-range E-1 digital SLR... on 17th October", the site said.

The camera initially looked like it might be called the EP-1, but more recent evidence suggests the name E-3. Some specifications from an anonymously released and unconfirmed document includes the following: 5 frames per second shooting, a 10-megapixel sensor, 11-point autofocus, sensor-shift image stabilization, a swiveling LCD, wireless flash control and a dust-reduction system.

Samsung's erratic digicam shower

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 07, 2007

Make that a passing one as well. Right after its IFA showing in Berlin, Samsung Singapore held a local showcase for a selected number of its new imaging products.

But since we've already covered the new Samsung camera range, let's find out what's missing instead.

Out of the new luxury lineup, the NV8 is ostentatiously omitted. For the L-series, the L730 was left out and the S85 was completely out of the picture.

Samsung spreads out new vidcam goodies

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 07, 2007

The Korean firm's camcorders are now smaller and pack, according to a fellow media observer, a "disconcerting resemblance to the JVC Everio's form factor".

Both the HMX10 and HMX10C (the "C" version has 8GB internal flash memory) are Samsung's first HD vidcams. Seen earlier at CES 2007, these use a CMOS sensor with 10x optical zoom and a 2.7-inch touchscreen. Yet, it's HD in the minimum sense of the term--it records to 720p.

The S$449 MX10 runs on newer storage mediums, SDHC and MMC Plus which in light of tumbling flash memory prices bodes well for the budget-minded. However, even for those on a shoestring budget, a battery life of 2 hours is barely enough. The addition of an optical viewfinder to offset the MX10's reliance on its 2.7-inch screen for framing and thus saving battery life would be a good improvement.

Finally, there's the DX10, Samsung's hybrid DVD flash memory (4GB internal) camcorder. It's slightly larger to accommodate the diameter of a DVD disc and touts the ability to burn DVDs from the vidcam's flash memory.

These camcorders will be available in Singapore by October. We were unable to get word on Asian availability at press time.

Samsung pursues runner-up position

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 07, 2007

Samsung has conveniently forgotten its vow to be the world's number one leader in MP3 players by 2007, if a press release statement is anything to go by.

"With our latest lineup of new MP3 players, camcorders and cameras, Samsung… aims to be a clear number two in all three fields by the end of 2008," said Mr Ki-Heung Yoon, managing director for Samsung Asia's Electronics Business Division.

Realistic goals aside, the Korean firm launched three new portable multimedia players to support its downgraded ambition at an event held in Singapore--the YP-P2 (3-inch touchscreen and 5 hours of video playback), the YP-T10 (a 7.9mm video-playing version of the YP-K3) and the YP-S5 (an update to last year's YP-K5).

All three players will be available in Singapore by October. No word was made on Asian availability.

In recognition of the increasingly social nature of media consumption, Samsung admitted that it will need to leverage on social network platforms to continue meeting the sharing needs of its customers. However, instead of piggybacking on established networks such as Facebook and MyYearbook, Samsung will be building on its own portal, Samsungplay.com, to fulfill that purpose.

One hopes, however, that Samsung has not forgotten Sony's disastrous outing with its propriety Connect portal.

HP introduces big-and-brawny iPaq 610 and iPaq 910 handhelds

Bonnie Cha  |  Sep 07, 2007

In addition to several other mobile product announcements, HP showed off two new handhelds, and they're not for the faint of heart.

Editors' note:
HP will host an Asia Pacific press event next week . The Asian availability of these handhelds will be verified then.

First, there's the HP iPaq 610 Business Navigator, a quad-band mobile with support for HSDPA and assisted GPS with integrated Google Maps. The Windows Mobile 6 (Professional Edition) device is also equipped with Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g with WPA2 security), 256MB Flash ROM/128MB SDRAM, and a 3-megapixel camera. Like the previous HP iPaq 510 Voice Messenger, the iPaq 610 has more of a voice-centric focus and includes the same advanced voice command system found in the 510, but it does tout a bigger 2.8-inch screen (versus 2 inches diagonally), and it's a touch screen to boot. Another design enhancement is the new Smart Touch wheel found in middle of the alphanumeric keypad that lets you scroll through the various menus items. The iPaq 600 series is slated to ship in late September for about US$600 for an unlocked version.

Now, for the messaging fanatics, there's the HP iPaq 910 Business Manager. As the successor to the HP iPaq hw6900 series, the iPaq 910 has a full QWERTY keyboard, push email capabilities, and a 2.46-inch touch screen. Many of the PDA-phone's other features are the same as the iPaq 610's, including HSDPA support, assisted GPS, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, and a 3-megapixel camera. While availability is expected to be late November or early December, HP did not release pricing information. There were no carrier announcements at this time, either.
