Crave Asia

Entire Ultimate series still on track

John Chan  |  Aug 16, 2007

Earlier today, various reports indicated that i-mate was axing all but two of its Ultimate series, the 6150 and 8150. This originated from Clove Technology, an online retailer based in the UK. In its news post, Clove said it "can now confirm, of the original five handhelds that were intended, only two will remain". It then went on to say which were the ones that have been axed, followed by suggesting alternatives that linked to the site's shopping pages.

CNET Asia contacted i-mate Asia Pacific and the official word is the company still plans to launch all models, but will do so in a staggered fashion starting with the 8150 and 6150.

So there we go. Those eyeing the 5150, 7150 and 9150 models can breathe easy. Sure, we understand that nothing's really for sure until we have it in our hands. But between Clove and i-mate, we'll take the latter's word for now.

Breathe easily?! I've been holding my breath for the 7150 for 6 months already - these were announced at the start of 2007 and still no defined date for it's release - meanwhile I'm getting increasingly tempted by alternatives already on the shelves... When will i-mate put a commitment to ship these devices i.e. a specific date, rather than vague assurances? Will there be any customers left, or will all those, like me, who are holding out to see these devices, have defected to E90, O2, HTC etc by the time they reach the market?! What's almost certain is that when I can finally get my hands on one, there will be a half-dozen similarly specified machines out there to choose from. And we'll all be taking future product announcements from i-mate with a healthy helping of scepticism. Breathe easily may well mean: don't wait around for i-mate products to ship...

I too have been waiting for Imate's 7150, I presently have the IMATE JASJAR which is a spectacular unit, however, when the jasjar was announced,a specific date and month was presented as to when the jasjar would be available . This ultimate series has been like GHOST material, all we see are pictures of whats to come yet no one has actually had any of the ultimate series in-hand to demonstrate as HTC items are on video showing the actual unit plus acyual month and date when whats seen is available. Imate is being very strange about this ultimate line, we see pictures, specs, many promises yet no physical items. Some has states 3 were eliminated yet some say they are still on track. What tracks are these items on when we have no clue as to what to believe right now. I'm now looking at theHTC advantage X7501 and the HTC-SHIFT as well, at least expected dates are issued and videos are shown with the ACTUAL units in hand. Come on Imate, get on the ball before interest is lost and alternatives are brought.
