USB Butt Cooler

Juniper Foo  |  Jun 15, 2007

Against our better judgment, this qualifies here as a cool gizmo only because it performs the function of cooling. No prizes for guessing which part of the anatomy. Either there's something lost in translation or the Japanese have, erm, a cheeky sense of geek humor, but Thanko's bottom line is since we spend such a ton of time on our behinds in the office, it kinda makes sense to have your seat cushion blow cool air to overheated parts. That said, prepare to be in the hot seat when you become the butt of office jokes.

Another flaw within Safari 3.0 for Windows beta

Robert Vamosi, CNET.com  |  Jun 15, 2007

Security researcher Robert Swiecki disclosed yesterday another vulnerability within the new Safari 3.0 for Windows beta, bringing the total of public vulnerabilities to nine. The latest flaw allows an attacker to steal a cookie. The flaw exists in the Javascript's window.setTimeout()implementation where the content the timer-triggered function is processed after window.location property is changed.

In response to other Safari 3.0 vulnerabilities, Apple released an updated version that addresses three of the nine public vulnerabilities.

Time-lapse photo system for amateur science teachers

Mike Yamamoto, CNET.com  |  Jun 14, 2007

This seems like a lot of money to do some time-lapse photography, but if you're an aspiring science teacher it will undoubtedly produce better footage of plants growing than the reel-to-reel films we were subjected to in grade school. This all-in-one system from Harbortronics can also provide a lesson in alternative energy because it runs on solar power.

The package includes a Pentax K110D Digital SLR, two 2GB memory cards and an automatic shutter controller for US$2,300, according to Uncrate. Let's hope the photos look better than the system itself, which resembles a camera stuck in a microwave with a solar panel glued on top. Via CNET Crave

Belkin wants a romp on the couch

Edvarcl Heng  |  Jun 14, 2007

It's nothing overtly complicated or terribly techie. In fact, Belkin's new CushTop and PocketTop would look more at home in Ikea than an IT shop. Upholstered like any well-made piece of furniture, these "stands" are designed to sit between your lap and the base of a laptop. For the family man who prefers to work from the couch, it's a comfort that his spawning goals will no longer be compromised by elevated temperatures between his legs.

The angled CushTop (S$59.99) is fairly rigid and is a blessed release for wrists aching for ergonomic typing comfort on a laptop. Belkin says you can keep power adapters within the recessed storage crevice, but enterprising types will sooner convert it into a cubbyhole for their remotes.

Belkin says that the PocketTop is apt for users who lug their laptops from room to room, but the PocketTop (S$69.99) isn't as small as its name suggests. It is, in fact, rather huge since it doubles as both a mobile computing workspace and an indoor laptop casing. We say "indoor" because it's not protected from the elements and should be allowed into the streets only on the condition that your laptop is waterproof. And should the family man decide to enjoy a little nookie on upholstery, be warned, both "tops" aren't shockproof.

The iPhone requires an iTunes Store account

Tom Krazit  |  Jun 14, 2007

One of the first things you'll need to do with your new iPhone is register with the iTunes Store in order to activate the handset.

Apple revealed the requirement in an email sent Tuesday to those who had registered to receive email updates on the TMHGIH (The Most Hyped Gadget In History). Presumably, most of the iPhone early adopters will be Apple devotees with current iTunes Store accounts, but for those who don't have an account already, have your credit card ready during the iPhone setup process.

Why would Apple do this? For one thing, iTunes is the application that will handle email syncing between the iPhone and a Mac or PC, so registering the device with the iTunes Store might make it possible to wirelessly sync email. But it also gives Apple a way to promote iTunes in front of iPhone users who might also sign up for a Media Max account from AT&T, the exclusive carrier of the iPhone. Usually the carrier controls the services available on a phone, but Apple appears to want that software and services relationship all to itself.
