Prada Phone price announced

Damian Koh  |  May 03, 2007

According to a press release issued from Hong Kong, the Prada Phone by LG is making a debut in Asia today. The handset will cost HK$6,200 in Hong Kong, NT$29,000 in Taiwan (with Bluetooth headset included) and S$1,288 (US$947.06) in Singapore, though it doesn't mean stocks are available yet.

Editors' note:
May 4, 2007--LG Electronics Singapore has clarified that the Prada Phone will cost S$1,288 (US$947.06) (without contract) instead of S$1,188 (US$873.53) as was given earlier. The article has been amended to reflect the changes.

At a local press launch for its Shine handsets, Howard Lee, managing director for LG Electronics Singapore, said there will be only 1,000 units available on the island-state and it will not be bundled with a Bluetooth headset.

The phone can be purchased from Prada boutiques for the first few weeks from the time it is released and is expected to be available around mid-May in Singapore.

Experience Sony's 4K technology now!

Philip Wong  |  May 03, 2007

Shot in film and digitally scanned into 4K movie, Spider-Man 3 is one of the latest demonstrations of what Sony's CineAlta technologies can offer to consumers in the coming years. While this is still strictly for commercial applications, it will just be a matter of time before 4K trickles into our living rooms just like all other past innovations.

Three words sums up the excellent visuals we garnered during one of the pilot screenings: Sharp and clean. Gone were the film grains, while fine details were aplenty and rendered in extreme clarity. The overall picture quality is probably one of the best we have seen in a while, putting aside a technical glitch that delayed the movie for over half an hour.

Still not convinced? Experience it yourself at the following CineAlta 4K-equipped Singapore theaters;

  • Golden Village VivoCity / Hall 11
  • Cathay Cineplexes / Cathay 7
  • Eng Wah Suntec / Hall 3 and 4
  • Shaw Bugis / Bugis 1 and 3

If the iPhone morphed into a watch

    Mike Yamamoto, CNET.com  |  May 02, 2007

If anything can be said of the people at SMS Technology, it's that they don't waste any time. Only two months after the appearance of their "world's smallest phone"--a Dick Tracy-style watch communicator--the Australian company has already filed for a next-generation version that some say looks like an iPhone for the wrist.

Gadgetell reports that plans for the "M500," as it's called, have been filed with the FCC and that it includes "all your basic phone functions plus SMS texting, audio, video and Bluetooth." It also also feature a 1.5-inch color OLED touchscreen with a built-in stylus.

Judging by the photos, though, this won't the most petite device in the world. Although the product literature claims it barely weighs 2 ounces, it looks more like a slightly smaller version of the iPhone strapped to a wristband than our idea of a watch-phone. We do, however, know of at least one group who will be thrilled by the news: The writers for SNL.

    Dell gets feisty with Linux

    Darius Chang  |  May 02, 2007

A long-time partner of Microsoft, Dell will be getting a little naughty with the latest sweet young thing from Linux--the Ubuntu "Feisty Fawn" edition.

According to a report by news.com, Dell will be offering desktops and notebooks bundled with Ubuntu's latest Linux flavor at the end of May. The PC manufacturer said that one of the top requests at its IdeaStorm site was for the open source software to be pre-installed in its computers. As such, it will be offering the Ubuntu operating system side-by-side with Microsoft's Windows program as options when selecting Dell systems.

This initiative, however, is still currently restricted to the US market. According to a Dell Singapore representative, the company is still working on a global program to roll out this offering to other regions.

VAIO G unleashed: Diets with LifeBook Q2010

    Darius Chang  |  May 01, 2007

    Editors' note :
As the first corporate model from Sony, it will not be available through its usual distribution channels. Instead, SIS Technologies will be the main retailer for the G series, as well as its own Sony Galleries stores. The VAIO G has a price tag of S$3,799 (US$2,793.38).
Anorexia is in, at least in the notebook world. The incredibly slim Sony VAIO G series will soon be unleashed in Asia Pacific and battles with the Fujitsu LifeBook Q2010 in the featherweight category.

At only 25.5mm high, the 12.1-inch VAIO G series is slimmer than two standard DVD cases stacked together. As it uses an ultralight but strong carbon-fiber chassis, it sneaks in at under 1.2kg which makes it slightly heavier than the magnesium-alloy LifeBook. Both ultralights are based on the Centrino Core platform and integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics card, making them capable of running Windows Vista.

But here is the kicker. The 1.15kg model sports an integrated optical drive. The battery life, according to Sony, logs in at 11 hours 30 minutes, making it a true all-day computing platform.
