Unclear on the concept: Night-vision Webcam

Mike Yamamoto  |  May 07, 2007

So let's get this straight: Night-vision devices are supposed to help you see things in the dark, like those night dart launchers, right? Not the other way around? That's what we thought, anyway, so we have no idea why anyone would want a "Night Vision WebCam".

This 1.3-megapixel camera has six infrared LED bulbs "to light any video conversation no matter how dark the conditions may be", Coolest-Gadgets says. Silly us--we would have just turned on a lamp.

Maybe this would be useful in a dorm if you're trying not to wake your roommates. Or maybe there's some other use that we'd just as soon not know about.

Hand Butler

Juniper Foo  |  May 07, 2007

Like the Web site's name goes, what on earth? The battery-operated Hand Butler is either a waste of good money or a great gag for party pals. So what does it actually do aside from looking like Mickey's dismembered gloved appendage? Seems you dump an item in the palm and point the Hand any which way. There's a sensor which detects when the Hand comes to the end of a table, so it'll stop just short of toppling over the edge like Humpty Dumpty. Funny until you tire of it. Gotta hand it to the gag meisters who thought this up.

The 12-in-1 uber-gadget

Mike Yamamoto, CNET.com  |  May 04, 2007

While the converging technologies of phones and music players continue to command attention, we should all be reminded that these aren't the only forms of consumer electronics that are morphing together. In fact, there's one new handheld that puts them all to shame in the all-in-one category.

How so, you ask? The "Brica ViewArt 1000" is an uber-device with a 2.5-inch display that "combines a still camera, camcorder, MP3 player, FM radio, voice recorder, e-book viewer, Webcam and a DVR," according to Technabob. So there.

But only 512MB internal memory for something that's billed as a "12-in-1" gadget? That's like building a Ferrari with a 2-gallon tank. Call us cynical, but for some reason we wouldn't expect stellar performance on its many fronts for a price of S$265.

KeyPort

Juniper Foo  |  May 03, 2007

Memory like Swiss cheese? Well, the KeyPort, which calls itself the world's first universal key fob, goes to the rescue. In case the word fob needs explaining, Wikipedia defines it as "anything from an electronic remote keyless entry system to a decorative keychain". In the case of the KeyPort, it's a really high-tech keychain that lets you do some pretty nifty things with your keys. Like organize them alongside each other in a compact case, and then unsheathe the required key with a single touch fo a sliding apparatus. That's not all. There's integrated RFID for keyless entry where applicable. Rounding it off are an alarm and LED functions. Very nice. Key fob? More like key snob.

New tiny Creative Zen at just S$69?

Edvarcl Heng  |  May 03, 2007

The latest thing to pop out of Creative's woodwork literally, the tiny Zen Stone is seriously the most Zen-like in the Singapore firm's stable, more so than even the Creative Zen V since it doesn't even come with a screen. While it clearly is Creative's response to the equally spartan Apple iPod shuffle, the Stone trumps the shuffle with a price tag of S$69 which puts it in the league of bargain basement MP3 players.

Editors' note:
According to Creative Singapore, only the black version will be available now. For the rest of the colors as well as the accessories, they will be available in the stores by end-May.

Despite its name, the Stone weighs just 19g and will be available in six colors: Black, green, blue, white, pink and red. In a rare turn of events, the Stone forgoes the myriad of features typical of Creative players for a basic player that goes low on price and size. According to Creative, there will be three accessories for the Zen Stone: The Zen Stone silicon skin (S$15), the armband (S$29) and the keychain case (S$25). Compare Stone and Shuffle here
