Electronic Wind Instrument with USB

Juniper Foo  |  Mar 16, 2007

Talk about taking the idea of plug-and-play into a whole new realm. We've already seen USB drum kits, guitars and keyboards. Now there's a USB wind instrument that lets the PC do the playing. Looking like the old school recorder we kids used to huff on in saliva-induced musicality, crossed with a clarinet, the bundled synthesizer software won't turn you into a Kenny G, but should put the power of an entire orchestra at your finger tips literally, from woodwind to brass, to percussion and even string. Carnegie Hall, here we come. (Not!)

ASUS u-Nedio: Internet radio without the PC

Edvarcl Heng  |  Mar 16, 2007

It may just look like a regular tabletop radio, but the u-Nedio takes Internet radio to another level. According to a ASUS spokesperson, the u-Nedio can currently connect to over 10,000 radio stations. It connects via Wi-Fi to 802.11b/g or through LAN itself. But while we were a tad disappointed to discover that it can't tune in to regular FM radio, the u-Nedio does double up as an alarm clock and syncs to Internet time. Additional stations can be added via url entry, but for technophobes, stations can also be added via a firmware update.
  • WLAN security: WPA, WPA2-AES, 64/128-bit WEP
  • MP3, WMA
  • 5watt speakers
  • 128 x 64 FSTN graphics display

Live: Samsung YP-K3 speakers sighted

Edvarcl Heng  |  Mar 16, 2007

As much as Samsung promised, the slide-in speakers works as advertised. But it adds a fair bit of bulk to the anorexic YP-K3. There's a mute slide on the back of the speakers for emergency muting, but the deal breaker here is the sound quality. How was it? Well, we think we love the fatter YP-K5's audio quality. However, after seeing a CNET.co.uk colleague's heavily scratched-up YP-K3, this speaker encasing may be a wonderful tool for pulling double duty while belting out some tunes.

CeBIT 2007: Archos 204

CNET.co.uk  |  Mar 15, 2007

After the announcement of the new Archos 704 PMP, we weren't expecting any more news from the company, but how wrong could we be?

Archos has just announced the 204--a very small 20GB MP3 player that's exclusive to the European market. We're very pleased to be European because this little beauty is, well, a beauty. It's got a 46mm (1.8-inch) OLED screen, just a touch bigger than Apple's iPod nano, and it plays music in MP3, WMA and WAV format. We're also told it'll support music bought from online stores such as Napster and MusicMatch.

What we like most about the 204's appearance is its professional style. Some smaller MP3 players tend to appeal to the younger market, thanks to their low cost, their lower capacity (most kids won't use more than about 4GB) and their typically more vibrant coloring. We're pleased to see that this small yet reasonably high-capacity MP3 player has been given a trendy metallic finish, which will certainly appeal to older consumers.

Photo support is also included, and you're free to personalize the theme of the navigation display by using a selected photo as a background--a nice touch and one not often seen as an option. Thankfully, Archos will let us enjoy 20 hours of music from a single charge, which brings it on par with Apple's hard disk-based iPods. Nice.

Crave can't wait to get its hands on the 204 and expects it to be a success in the UK. To get over 8GB of storage in an MP3 player, you really need to be looking at either a 30GB iPod or a 30GB Creative Zen Vision M, and these are much larger than this new Archos player.

With 20GB of storage, 20 hours of battery life, photo libraries and support for online music stores, this could really be killer product. At around £130 it's an incredible purchase--check back later this year for a full review. -NL

ASUS PG221: Dump your speakers for a screen

Edvarcl Heng  |  Mar 15, 2007

It's the kitchen sink of LCD monitors. Besides a built-in 1.3-megapixel Webcam and plenty of inputs for other consumer electronics, the PG221 packs a whopper in the audio department as well. By incorporating SRS TruSurround XT, a digital sound processing algorithm, the PG221 stereo speakers may be a cost-saver when it comes to replicating a 5.1 setup minus the speakers.

Specifications:

  • 22-inch widescreen display (16:10)
  • Resolution: 1,680 x 1,050
  • 1.3-megapixel Webcam
  • Built-in USB hub
  • Response time: 2ms
  • 2.1 channel speakers
