An acoustic soother by any name sounds just as good? Well, SegaToys' Digital Sound Feeling System works along the same principles of dampening unwanted ambient noise to promote relaxation. Once powered on, the device will bath the user in the three-dimensional sounds of nature, from birds chirping to wind bells chiming, to water running. Of course, this being Japanese, nothing is as it seems. Possibly in an attempt to blend in with the whole new age deal, the Digital Sound Feeling System is disguised as a log or very large twig. Go figure. Fetch, Ubu, fetch.
Art Lebedev Studio has always had interesting designs, and the Sonicum speakers are no exception. Each of the two speakers bears the volume icon shape when viewed from the side. You may not be able to see the shape when it's facing you, but the Sonicum will make for a great conversation piece among your colleagues and friends. The set comes with a sub-woofer which has a smiley face for bass control. Now, that, we don't get. Available from May 7 at the Art Lebedev store for US$120.
In line with the US Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star 4.0 regulations, HP will begin offering business desktops which use less juice.
Three models--the dc5700, dc7700 and dc5750--will be the first machines from the Alto Palo manufacturer to contain Energy Star 4.0 hardware. According to HP, this will help businesses save between US$6 and US$58 in power bills annually. Not a big sum for consumers, but multiply that figure by hundreds or even thousands of units used by MNCs and Governments and the savings become significant. HP Asia Pacific was unable to comment at press time if these energy-efficient systems would be available outside the US.
An accidental peek-a-boo by Apple's UK online store gave consumers a glimpse of a blazing-fast Mac Pro working on dual quad-core processors.
The Mac Pro is a professional-level multimedia machine with dual graphics card options and a massive chassis capable of holding loads of harddisks. Apple's flagship desktop can render and edit high-definition content which would bring lesser machines to a grinding halt. Considering the price tag of Intel's quad-core chips, expect to pay a high premium to own this powerhouse when it is officially released.
Worried that your critical data is under risk but don't trust software solutions to protect your harddisk? Seagate's DriveTrust technology aims to address that shortcoming.
Unlike software or other hardware security features, Seagate's latest laptop storage device contains embedded encryption components which prevents unauthorized users from booting up from the harddisk. According to the storage maker, ASI Computer Technologies will be using these disks in its OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) machines for retail brands in the next few months, with other major PC vendors coming onboard later this year. Analyst expects that Seagate's DriveTrust technology or its equivalent will become standard issue for corporate machines, especially those dealing with sensitive data.
