The jury's finally out on the latest designboom competition. And with the theme of "house party", the top prize has been nabbed by Taiwanese entrant Wen-Haur Yen. Good to know Asia has the design gumption to score one against 3,070 participants from around 89 countries. We reckon what makes Wen-Haur's entry a hit is that it's as much about function as form. The practical Asian side? The Coolight works as a handle fitted with a steel cylinder of cryogen you pre-freeze, which you can pop into your beer bottle to chill without the diluting effects of ice. A hole at the top lets you drink your preferred poison without having to remove the device. Color LEDs add fun party effects. Again, Wen-Haur's pragmatic side emerges with the LED doing double-duty as a display for information such as time and temperature. We won't be surprised if the commercial model throws in a breathelizer for drivers. Until then, somebody get this out into production quick!
Beside the W10 and U20 we had reported on last week, iriver will be unveiling four more new products. The first is the T60 which harks back to the form factor of the Toblerone-shaped iFP-1090.
The Mplayer may spell a partnership between Walt Disney and iriver, but we are quite unsure how it works. The B20 is an update of the B10 which featured T-DMB.
We are most excited about Unit2 most of all. Other than the rumored built-in DVD player, Wi-Fi and TV functionalities, it has incorporated a phone function which we have been tipped off about since mid-2006. What's interesting is that the telephony is built into the remote itself.

Remember Mysterio? The super villain with the goldfish bowl helmet who used to bamboozle Spiderman with illusions from his collection of mini projectors? Well, web-slingers everywhere should be quailing in fear. Microvision may be bringing the same technology to a mobile phone or PVP near you.
Based on an Integrated Photonics Module (IPM), a highly miniaturized projector engine of Microvision's own design, the IPM prototype will be demonstrated only to invited guests at CES. According to a press release statement, the IPM, which is about the size of an Apple iPod shuffle, is capable of projecting image sizes equivalent to a large screen plasma TV on almost any surface.

Hot on the heels of HP's tx1000us Vista-powered tablet PC comes Toshiba's Portege R400 tablet PC with a stylish white body.
The Portege R400 is a 12.1-inch convertible laptop with ultra-low voltage Core Duo processors. Unique to the system is a small LED display on the front edge that shows the time, battery level, wireless signal strength and email message status. Admittedly, it is not as exciting as the slideshow screen in the ASUS W5Fe.
The Portege R400 should be launched on January 30 in the US with a starting price of US$2,500.
