Dell unleashes AMD laptops

Darius Chang  |  Nov 02, 2006

Editors' note :
The Dell Inspiron 1501 is available from today for Asia-Pacific markets. In conjunction with the launch, Dell has also announced the inclusion of its upgraded Dell Support 3.2 application which constantly scans the system and downloads auto-fixes, updates and drivers. It is available now in English, with simplified and traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese versions to be released in late November.

Transitioning from purely Intel-based systems, Dell is now offering portables based on AMD's processor technology. This much-anticipated move ends the exclusive relationship the US manufacturer had with Intel's Centrino platform, giving consumers more choice over the internal components of their machine.

The Dell Inspiron 1501 is a 15.4-inch widescreen notebook with options for AMD Sempron, Turion 64 and the dual-core Turion 64 X2 chips. Based on the integrated ATI Radeon Xpress1150 graphics chipset with 256MB of HyperMemory (which combines discrete video RAM with system memory), it is a mainstream machine built for the average home user. Prices start at S$1,277 (US$840.13) for the Sempron model.

Sony releases the world's lightest laptop

Darius Chang  |  Nov 02, 2006

Rather than fight toe-to-toe with the incredibly slim Fujitsu LifeBook Q2010, Sony is making its mark by launching what it claims to be the world's lightest notebook.

Though not the lightest laptop in Sony's lineup--the older 10.4-inch Sony VAIO X505 weighs a mere 785g--it breaks new ground in the 12.1-inch arena. Weighing a mere 898g for an ultraportable model without an integrated optical drive, the new 12.1-inch "type G" VAIO laptop is as light on its feet as Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPCs) such as the Samsung Q1 and ASUS R2H with their smaller screens. The version with a built-in DVD Super Multi writer is slightly heftier at 984g. Both models have a light but strong carbon-fiber body and a stated battery life of 6 hours with the standard battery pack. A larger power cell will extend the unplugged time to 12.5 hours but add 132g to the total weight.

Running on a Core Solo 1.06 processor and 512MB memory, it may be no powerhouse but it's nevertheless Windows Vista-ready. The basic model will retail for 220,000 yen (S$2,934.56) in Japan, which is also the only place you can get your hands on the system since Sony says it has no plans to bring the model worldwide.

YouTube on your mobile phone?

Reuben Lee  |  Nov 02, 2006

It looks like mobile users will soon be able to share video clips with others via their cell phones. According to news reports, Chad Hurley, who is the chief executive and co-founder of popular video-sharing portal YouTube, revealed at a recent summit in New York that the company plans to offer something on a mobile device within the next year.

Currently, the company has a YouTube To Go service for users to upload video clips via their phone for viewing on the Web site. This new service is expected to go one step further by allowing YouTube users to upload and view the clips from their cellular devices.

YouTube was acquired by Internet search giant Google in a US$1.65 billion deal last month.

Another 1080p stunner from Sharp

Philip Wong  |  Nov 02, 2006

Sharp Aquos supporters rejoice! The Japanese company is launching in the coming weeks a new series of LCD TVs equipped with the latest bells and whistles in the visual technologies. Dubbed the G7-series, the new Aquos are future-proofed with 1,920 x 1,080-pixel LCD panels supplemented by dual 1080p HDMI terminals for true full-HD compatibility.

The new lineup also features an all-digital DVI socket for computer connectivity, beating the competitors' offering of a standard analog-only PC (D-Sub) variant. With an ultra-high 10,000:1 dynamic contrast and lightning-fast 4ms response time, the G7-series is definitely a strong contender among the various 1080p models out in the market. Do check back on this space as we update the pricings of these new entries closer to rollout.

Creative banging hopes on Zen patent

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 02, 2006

In a report by Bloomberg News, Creative took a larger loss than expected after it was outsold 23 to one by Apple Computer's iPod against its MP3 players in the US.

While Creative has made peace with its chief competitor, it still has a bone to pick with other leading MP3 player manufacturers over licensing agreements and this may lead to new revenue streams for the Singapore-based company.

Along with the impending payout from Apple, Creative will no doubt be looking to the Christmas shopping season to boost its coffers.
