Gemei X-900: Going game on retro

Edvarcl Heng  |  Oct 16, 2006

Gaming emulators are fast becoming the norm in China. But to pack in three of the cult consoles of all time? Super Famicom, Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Mega Drive? Unreal, says the top honchos of Super Mario Brothers 3. What's Halo compared to Contra? Street Fighter versus Dead or Alive? It's a no contest. Especially when modern day portable gaming devices have to jump through so many hoops just to break out one decent round of Sonic the Hedgehog (Think Sony PSP and homebrew).

Have a break. Play a game. Get a Gemei.

Creative zaps FM recording feature in the Vision:M

Edvarcl Heng  |  Oct 16, 2006

Creative apparently listens to its users. The new 1.50.02 firmware for the award-winning MP3 players adds new features like video zooming and added language support. But for what Creative giveth, it also taketh away. The new firmware will also strip away the FM recording function of the Zen Vision:M, much to the chagrin of users. According to readers in the forums, this is due to US licensing issues from the RIAA.

In a response to our email query, a spokesperson for Creative Asia, confirms the same firmware revision is applicable to both Asia and the US. However, at the current moment, units in Asia will still be using firmware version 1.41.01 till further notice.

Bottomline? If you want to keep your FM recording feature, don't patch.

FotoHub's new storybook

Damian Koh  |  Oct 16, 2006

Printing out photos and slotting them into photo albums is so passé, time-consuming and sometimes it just doesn't turn out right. So why bother, when you can leave it to the professionals? All you have to do is select the images and, of course, pay when you receive the goods.

FotoHub, with the support of Spring Singapore and Sun Microsystems, has embarked on a new business model that unites all its core functions under a single roof. One of the services it provides is FotoStory--a leather-bound customized photo album.

Under this new business model, all the images uploaded to the company's Web site can be sent to a regional processing center for printing or to the Singapore headquarters for additional services such as large-format printing or customizing photo albums.

All the user needs to do is upload the images, select a template from a list provided, lay out the pictures and send it for print. If you're too lazy to do all that, professionals at FotoHub will do it for you, for a fee, of course.

According to Eric Tan, CEO of the Consumer Division for FotoHub, it takes about two days from the time you click submit to the time you collect the album from any one of its five satellite kiosks in central Singapore.

So what are you lazy bums waiting for?

HP wireless watch

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 16, 2006

Imagine a wearable wireless hub that sits right on your wrist (which is getting a trifle crowded with all the other wrist gadgets coming up). Pretty nifty, huh? Unfortunately, that's all you can right now, i.e. keep imagining. HP dreamed up the concept of a "personal area network" that can handle any wireless connection, be it Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, WiMax or 3G, while looking Tiffany pretty on your wrist. However, the nearest date that HP reckons this will be commercially available is 2016, a good decade later, by which time some of us would need help just putting on our dentures. Still, it's a worthy idea. And like all good ideas, this one may be worth waiting for. Check out the artist rendering meantime.

Motorola unveils the Red RAZR

Reuben Lee  |  Oct 15, 2006

The mobile phone maker will be introducing a red version of its RAZR V3m in support of the Global Fund, an initiative by Bono and Bobby Shriver to fight HIV and AIDS in Africa. This follows Apple's recent announcement of the iPod nano Red Special Edition for the same Product (Red) campaign.

Those of us in Asia who are hoping to get hold of the RED MOTORAZR V3m will, however, be disappointed. Like the Red SLVR which can be purchased only in the UK, the Red RAZR is currently available only in the US from mobile operator Sprint. The handset will retail for US$304.99 (or US$64.99 with a two-year service agreement) in November. Click for larger images (1, 2 and 3)
