Why is a stapler a stapler if it's staple-less? It's no trick question, though this isn't the first such stapleless stapler. It does, however, have a rather interesting form factor that looks like someone swiped a siren off the top of a police car. This one does its bid for Mother Earth by doing away with those little metallic bits. Just note that it can bind only three to five sheets of paper, and does so by punching holes out of the sheet, then using the flaps of paper as a buckle. Not particularly binding, but for US$2.49 a pop, this is no hardship on your pocket.
This is the second made-for-wallet outing we've come across that's way cool, the other being the Wallet Flash. That said, this iteration isn't terribly practical, and online retailer Marware points that out by adding a caveat that this isn't for use in pant pockets. Certainly, any thicker and that bulge is going to score you some knowing sneers. For those who hold their entire life in their wallet, the C.E.O. Billfold Wallet packs in even an iPod nano. It's not exactly Prada, but it should go handsomely enough with that nano.
Both major chip manufacturers--AMD and Intel--are slashing their processor prices, which may lead to cheaper desktops and notebooks during the holiday season.
The TL-60, a dual-core Turion chip for thin notebooks that runs at 2GHz, dropped 26 percent, from US$354 to US$263. The TL-56, which is a similar chip that runs at 1.8GHz, dropped from US$263 to US$220. The TL-52, which runs at 1.6GHz, fell from US$220 to US$184.
On desktops, the Athlon 64 FX-62, a 2.8GHz monster chip for gamers, plummeted from US$827 to US$713. Click here for more of AMD's updated prices.
Intel cuts, on the other hand, were on the Celeron line. The Celeron D 360 for desktops plunged from US$84 to US$69 while the Celeron 326, the cheapest chip Intel makes, went down from US$39 to US$34.
The notebooks with an aluminum chassis has just been bumped up to the Core 2 Duo platform at no additional increase in price.
For the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro, there is a choice between a Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz or 2.33GHz chip, while the 17-inch model starts off with the top-of-the-line 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo processor. In addition, there's also a speedy FireWire 800 port.
According to Apple, the 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo chip is up to 39 percent faster than the previous 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo processor and seven times faster than the older PowerBook G4 laptop with a 1.67GHz IBM PowerPC processor.
Remember Mr Freeze, Gotham City's supervillain who dons a suit that keeps his body temperature below freezing and enhances his strength? Well, the Ice Jacket is a bit like that, cloaking your favorite tipple in a jacket of ice. If nothing else, it's a great ice breaker at parties. The process sounds simple enough. Just place the bottle on the base of the Ice Jacket, slip on the sleeve, and close the three cam locks. Then fill the assembly with warm water, plug and place in the freezer. After that, run briefly under water to release the cam locks and sleeve. And there you have it, an iced-encased bottle.
Or perhaps the start of a subzero degree party at home? Apparently, the Ice Jacket is no gimmick. Drinkers say the drinkability of white alcohols greatly increases as the temperature drops. Well, bottoms up to that as you chill out with a bottle.
