Acer Ferrari ramps it up

Darius Chang  |  Sep 29, 2006

Continuing with the popular franchise, a new notebook has joined the Acer Ferrari lineup--the Acer Ferrari 1000.

Unlike its predesessors, which were 15-inch midsized systems, the Acer Ferrari 1000 is a petite 12.1-inch performer. However, don't mistake its size as a measure of its performance. Incorporating the dual-core AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, it may be using an integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 chipset, but it also has 256MB of dedicated video RAM which can be ramped up to 512MB by pulling from the system memory. It also adds on a Web cam for video conferencing needs.

Weighing only 1.75kg with a six-cell battery, we expect this model to be a hit with racing fans who appreciate the trademark-checkered carbon-fiber pattern. But expect to pay a premium for this tiny powerhouse, as it will be retailing for S$2,998 (US$1,972.37).

Creative MuVo V100: It's an update

Edvarcl Heng  |  Sep 29, 2006

The first MuVo V200 was lauded because its presentation of the USB plug is different from other MP3 players at the time. It was elegantly hidden within the player in a L-shaped joint, unlike other models which used the rather crass USB cap. The new V100 is the 2006 update. Nothing revolutionary though. There's an up in battery life from 15 to 18 hours and it's slightly thinner (15mm compared to 16mm). Check our comparison chart here

HP Media Vault gets leaked

Darius Chang  |  Sep 29, 2006

Editors' note :
The HP Media Vault will be available in Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan by early 2007. The 300GB version will cost US$379 (S$601.62) and the 500GB unit will be priced at US$549 (S$871.48). Click here for a larger image of the HP Media Vault.

First unveiled at HP's Big Bang event in Beijing, China, and placed under media embargo till the end of September, information about the HP Media Vault appears to have been let loose in the blogging wild.

When CNET Asia was in the Middle Kingdom, we had a sneak peek of the American manufacturer's first attempt at a home network storage solution--the HP Media Vault. Looking like a small-form a factor PC, it features dual harddisk bays, Gigabit Ethernet, three USB 2.0 ports and support for up to 1.2TB capacity. For the paranoid among you, this NAS (network attached storage) is also capable of RAID 0/1 configurations.

Despite the leak, HP will only release the official specifications and pricing after September 29. We'll keep you updated when we know more. Unless, of course, there's another leak out there.

New PowerShot and IXUS available soon

Damian Koh  |  Sep 29, 2006

If you were waiting to buy the new PowerShot G7, or any of the three IXUS cameras launched recently, well, you have to wait till mid-October. But at least you can start saving for it now.

Canon has announced at a local press launch the availability and prices of its latest lineup. At S$969 (US$637.50), the 10-megapixel PowerShot G7 isn't for everyone but targeted at enthusiasts who want to have manual controls on their shooter sans the bulk of a digital SLR.

Those who need their Titanium fix can opt for the IXUS 900 Ti which will cost S$769 (US$505.92) at launch. The other two IXUS--the 850 IS and i7 Zoom--will be priced at S$729 (US$479.61) and S$499 (US$328.29), respectively. All four cameras are slated to be available in stores from the second week of October.

Lenovo recalls ThinkPad batteries

Darius Chang  |  Sep 29, 2006

After the dance of the flaming laptop in the City of Angels, Lenovo is not taking any chances and recalling 526,000 notebook batteries worldwide.

According to a joint statement by IBM and Lenovo: "Although no make or model of battery is immune from some overheating or failure, Lenovo has confirmed that these batteries can be subject to overheating, posing a potential fire hazard, and Lenovo is advising customers to check if they are using one of the affected batteries."

Affected models include:

  • ThinkPad R Series (R51e, R52, R60, R60e)
  • ThinkPad T Series (T43, T43p, T60)
  • ThinkPad X Series (X60, X60s)

  • In the three to four weeks before the replacement batteries arrive, users are advised to remove the battery and run the unit on mains. To check if your power cell is eligible for the recall, you can go to Lenovo's battery recall program.
