Thai children to get US$100 laptops

Darius Chang  |  Aug 21, 2006

Editors' note:
The specifications of the One Laptop Per Child PC, hereby christened 2B1, has been released. According to reports, it runs on a 400MHz AMD Geode processor, 128MB RAM and 512MB of flash storage. Complete with a Webcam, three USB 2.0 ports and an SD card reader, it uses a stripped-down version of Linux. Initial units will cost an estimated US$140 (S$221.26), though the price is expected to go down over time.

According to various news articles, come October and November, more than 500 Thai children will get to test the US$100 (S$157.40) laptops as part of the One Laptop Per Child program. Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, said that if this project pans out, elementary students in the country may eventually be carrying portables instead of books.

The US$100 (S$157.40) laptop, which uses Linux OS, flash memory instead of a harddisk, and hand- or foot-driven dynamo for power, is the brainchild of Nicholas Negroponte. Field trials for its notebooks will start in several other developing countries like Brazil, Nigeria and Argentina. More images of the laptop prototype can be viewed at our photo gallery.

Black Ice Cool Collar CCX

Juniper Foo  |  Aug 21, 2006

Given the lukewarm response toward Sharper Image's clunky neck brace, we're not sure which way ZimEx's offering will blow when it's put to the test. The CCX aims to keep the user cool under the collar, literally, at around 13 degrees Celcius. It's easy enough to activate. Dunk it in cold water, a fridge or freezer for 20 minutes, and it's good to give you some cool relief for up to an hour or two, a lot less chill time than Sharper Image's cooling system, but a lot more comfy to don.

Via CrissCross

Price: 10,000 yen (US$85.30)
Availability: At ZimEx Inc
Device: Cooling aid
Basic specs: Activated by ice water in 20 mins, maintains temp of 13 degrees C, reusable, can be refrigerated, frozen stays cool for 2 hours, one wrap, two black Ice packs

Palm to announce a new Treo next month

Reuben Lee  |  Aug 19, 2006

The handheld maker is set to unveil a new Treo smartphone in the UK next month. According to various news sources, a spokeswoman from the California-based firm has confimed that the official announcement will be made on September 12. Information on the new Treo is sketchy for now, though it was reported that the new handheld will run on the Windows Mobile OS and operate on Vodafone's 3G network.

Unfortunately, Palm does not comment on future products. Thus, like the Treo 700p and 700w PDA-phones, it is not known whether the company will eventually offer the new Treo in Asia. Stay tuned for more updates.

Hi-Fi-looking system for less than S$500

Philip Wong  |  Aug 18, 2006

Do you have the urge to go component-grade audio equipment but decided eventually to hold back that thought due to the lack of space? Philips may just have the proposition for you with its latest MCD708 DVD micro theater system, retailing at just S$499 (US$328.29).

The classy-looking micro component offering resembles a miniature high-end stereo system with its combination of independent audio decks, real rosewood speakers and metallic damping spikes. Fine aesthetics aside, the system is also powered by an efficient 100W digital amplifier coupled with its unique neodymium ribbon tweeters. The integrated disc player supports playback of DVDs, VCDs and CDs and is compatible with popular multimedia formats such as DivX, MP3, JPEG and WMA.

Dell Dimension embraces AMD

Darius Chang  |  Aug 18, 2006

It all began when Dell, previously retailing only Intel boxes, started to offer AMD's Opteron processors in its server lineup. Today, the Round Rock, Texas, manufacturer announced that it is expanding its relationship with the California chip maker by putting AMD processors in the Dimension desktop series. According to Dell, the first AMD-based systems are slated to retail in September. Coincidentally, the first Intel-based Core 2 Duo PCs are expected to hit in stores during the same time frame.
