When iPods and diamonds are a gal's best bud

Edvarcl Heng  |  May 22, 2006

Remember the diamond-encrusted iPod casing we mentioned in January? Well, here's a worthy companion that will add a few mili-carats to that glittering case. The iDiamond from Milan-based Mac@Work is a clip-on which affixes itself on the iPod earphones and comes with four different shapes: Heart, star, crescent and lighting. Prices start at 660€ to 750€ (US$843 to US$958), which is certainly anything but cheap. More info here

Toshiba A100 FIFA World Cup Special Edition

Darius Chang  |  May 19, 2006

The World Cup fever is among us and Toshiba. As the official IT sponsor for the soccer event of the year, the company is launching a special-edition Satellite A100 notebook to commemorate the event. As this model already has several color options, this special edition differentiates itself with a gold chassis. That's right. Now you can have a complete IT bling collection with Motorola's RAZR V3i D&G Special Gold Edition and this gaudy portable.

One would expect the price of this mobile to hit the proverbial roof, considering that it's riding on the World Cup wave. Not so. Surprisingly, the retail price is S$2,599, complete with a dual-core processor and DVD Super Multi drive. This notebook will be showcased with the HD DVD Qosmio G30 in Singapore on May 27 and available for pre-orders at Toshiba's Web site.

The specifications of the Satellite A100 2006 FIFA World Cup Limited Edition Model are:

  • Core Duo T2300 Processor 1.66GHz
  • 1GB DDR2 RAM
  • 80GB SATA harddisk
  • DVD Super Multi Drive
  • ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 with 128MB HyperMemory

Mutual mea culpa: Apple versus Creative

Edvarcl Heng  |  May 19, 2006

In a report by Bloomberg News, Apple Computer apparently batted one back for the Cupertino home team after Singapore-based Creative Technology threw a lawsuit and a trade complaint at the iPod manufacturer.

With the patent that Creative was awarded for its Zen media player's interface, the Singapore firm's legal eagles were looking at an easy way to dig their talons into Apple. But it turns out that this Apple has thorns of its own when it filed a suit claiming that Creative had infringed on four Apple patents at a Wisconsin District Court on May 15.

Now with lawsuits springing out from each side, Creative's self-declared MP3 war has shifted from the retail to the legal. Will the Singapore-based giant's war chest hold out against Apple's coffers? Or will it end up with both sides dropping their suits in exchange for an out-of-court settlement? Stay tuned… on a podcast near you. More info here

BenQ-Siemens trio headed this way

Juniper Foo  |  May 19, 2006

In BenQ-Siemens' case, it takes three to tango, with the company's mobile division finally confirming the launch dates of three of its phones. Originally slated for an April launch, the CL71 slider has been delayed to a late May rollout. Meanwhile, both the EL71 and E61 are firm for a June debut in Singapore.

Specs-wise, the CL71 offers the standard features expected in today's music phone. Those looking out for a musically inclined handset can expect up to 10 hours of music, with the onboard player capable of supporting MP3 and other formats, a six-band equalizer and the BenQSyncer software. The phone will come in a choice of silver and orange.

As for the other two sliders, the blocky-looking EL71 is notable for its 2-inch QVGA 262K-color display, semi-automatic sliding mechanism and microSD card slot. But it won't score any brownie points with shooters owing to a low-res 1.3-megapixel camera. This comes in Quartz Anthracite or Opal Black.

The CL71 offers more or less the same features as its EL71 sibling, but is a more stunning looker, with an iF Design Award 2006 to give it credence.

Prices for all three models were not available at press time.
