Wii! The Revo turned Wii is coming!

Philip Wong  |  May 26, 2006

E3 had been an unprecedented success for gaming underdog Nintendo judging from the snaking hands-on queue for its Wii gaming console. Charged with renewed confidence, the Japanese company announced yesterday much-anticipated news on the availability and pricing for Wii.

Priced at less than US$250, up to six million units are expected to ship worldwide in Q4 2006 between its scheduled launch date and March 31, 2007. Hardware aside, it is also forecasting 17 million Wii games to fly off the shelf in the same period.

Could this be the end?

Damian Koh  |  May 26, 2006

Canon Inc. is considering laying off the development of new film cameras as it focuses resources on its digital camera business. This "consideration" comes after the exit of Konica Minolta from the camera and photo-finishing business with Nikon also pulling the plug on its analog cameras early this year.

At the time of writing, nothing is affirmative but Canon has told Reuters it will continue to produce and sell existing models before deciding on the viability of this business in the future while monitoring market demand.

A representative from Canon Asia-Pacific we spoke to said the company was in the midst of getting more details from Canon Inc.

Combimouse

Juniper Foo  |  May 26, 2006

If we received a dollar for every new-age keyboard/mouse combo we came across in our tech travails, we'd be rich! Now it seems an Aussie has, in a Frankensteinish way, fused together keyboard and mouse in order to make both input devices more ergonomical to use. The Combimouse essentially splits the keyboard into two halves, with the right doubling as a mouse. Depending on how you see this, it could cleverly eliminate the need to shift countlessly between keyboard and rodent, though the idea of mousing around with something that unwieldy isn't likely to score with FPS gamers. In the ideas department at least, the Combimouse has earned design kudos, not to mention a detailed usability study. Ker-ching.

When it's all about click and run

Edvarcl Heng  |  May 25, 2006

The CNET Asia uber cool alert sounded yesterday when we first heard of the new Nike/iPod alliance. Pairing a nano with a built-in pedometer in a Nike shoe may sound extravagant, but it's the sort of geek dream that will have us signing up with the nearest gym. Preferably one with lotsa treadmills situated in front of the ladies' section.

But Gizmodo just uncovered the fact that arch rival Microsoft had came up with it first. A solution that pairs a portable chest ECG with a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone. Too bad it didn't take off. Then again, cool probably sits better in a shoe than a mess of wires across your chest. More info here

It's raining flat-panel TVs

Philip Wong  |  May 25, 2006

If you are in the market for a new flat-panel TV, you may like to check out the following new offerings from LG. With screen sizes ranging from 26 to a sizeable 50 inches, there is bound to be a model satisfying your entertainment needs.

New in the lineup is LG's proprietary 2006 XD engine enhanced with 3D noise reduction and color control functions. The former provides multiframe adaptive noise reduction, while the latter adds brightness to the original hue and saturation adjustments.

Plasma TV devotees should also consider the 42PC1R equipped with Clear Filter technology. Utilizing a thin film over the traditional glass filter, it suppresses ambient reflections resulting in enhanced clarity and reduced eye fatigue.
