An interesting characteristic of these shooters, such as the five highlighted below, is that they all employ a backside-illuminated (BSI) image sensor, which also aids photos snapped in low-light environments. But take note that the size of the sensor used in compacts is still relatively tiny (smaller than the fingernail on your pinkie, actually), so the video quality may not be as good as those captured by dSLRs such as the Canon EOS 550D.
That said, if you want the additional resolution for video recording, do check out these five high-end point-and-shoots highlighted below. But remember, full-HD clips take up more space on the memory card, so use one with a high storage capacity or have a few spare ones on hand. Also, do carry extra batteries as recording high-definition movies extensively will sap more power from the camera than usual.

1. | Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX9
First take One of the buzzwords this year is 3D, and it's not just for TVs. Cameras, too, are touting 3D capture capabilities. The first consumer-oriented 3D camera was the Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1 announced last year. Sony followed suit two months ago when it announced the NEX-5 and NEX-3 mirrorless interchangeable lens system shooters, which have 3D panoramic function. CNET Asia rating: 7.6 out of 10 The good: Solid design; overflowing with photo, movie features; very fast shooting performance for its class.
The bad: Photo and video quality is weakest part of this package.
The bottom line: There's a lot to like about the Nikon Coolpix P100, but you'll need to keep your photo quality expectations in check to really enjoy it.

3. | Fujifilm FinePix HS10
CNET Asia rating: 7.4 out of 10 The good: Plenty of shooting functions for enthusiasts; handy 30x optical zoom; useful tilting LCD; 7fps burst mode at full resolution; good-quality full-HD video capture.
The bad: As big and heavy as a dSLR; picture quality can be better; performance sluggish in certain modes.
The bottom line: The HS10 is a camera that enthusiasts will appreciate, but certain aspects of it can be improved upon.

4. | Samsung WB2000
First take Compact cameras that can capture RAW-format images are somewhat of an interesting bunch. They may not be priced at a premium like high-end point-and-shoots, yet they have the same advanced features such as manual exposure control. One fine example is the Samsung WB2000. This shooter has almost all the features found in the top-tier EX1, yet it is positioned one notch lower. That said, the WB2000 is still more advanced than most compacts you can find on the market now. First take | See full specs | Rate this | ||||||||||||||||
