LAS VEGAS--The Korean chaebol extends its leadership in the home audio and video segment with several key product announcements at this year's Consumer Electronics show. One of them is the introduction of its Touch of Color (TOC) design concept in its LCD (Series 6 and 7), plasma (Series 7) and home theater (HT-X715) range. According to Samsung, the clean glass-like finish and smooth, streamlined appearance are a result of manufacturing processes that eliminate the need for screws and glue. Samsung also claims it's the first in the industry to launch a 3D-enabled plasma TV under its Series 4 panels.
What caught the attention of CES visitors, however, was the super-slim OLED (14-inch and 31-inch) and LCD (52-inch) panels on display at the booth. Many people also tried their hand at a 57-inch panel that supported gesture control.
The HT-X810 Home Theater Sound Bar and the three-channel BS900 Bluetooth speaker attracted quite a bit of attention. We managed to get a glimpse of a prototype speaker unit based on the BS900's three-channel system, designed for TV rather than for portable devices.
Now here's a bit of interesting news on the Duo HD players from Samsung. While the BD-UP5000 has yet to land on Asian shores and Samsung has just announced the upgrade model, the BD-UP5500, a representative at the booth told CNET Asia that there will be an upcoming BD-UP6500 player, expected next autumn or winter. It will come with a built-in HQV (Hollywood Quality Video) processor, a feature missing in both the UP5000 and UP5500 players. Find out more about HQV and what it does here.
