Augment your reality and be a Transformer

The new Transformers movie is finally out in theaters, but for those of you who haven't had the chance to check it out out (like me), here's something you can try.

Drop on over to weareautobots.com and give their augmented reality experiment a try. Using facial recognition the site will pick up your face with the Web camera, and then it masks your ugly mug with an Optimus Prime head. Sadly, it does not seem to work for my dog Pepe Q-tip.

The Web site can be a little finnicky, so I can't guarantee it'll work right away. I got it to work after a few attempts without too much hassle.

Of course, we've seen a lot of developments in AR here in Japan recently as well. At the Make fair a few weeks back there were more than a few augmented reality projects, many of them by the Nico Nico Tech people. My personal favorite was the one where you put on a pair of glasses and it lets you look up Hatsune Miku's skirt. I have to confess there's not a lot going on under a cartoon's skirt, as much as us guys would like to believe... But lots of fun nonetheless.

Other notable AR projects here in Japan:
