From Bali to a digital world

Indonesia's broadcast goes digital. By enacting Law No. 32/2002, the country's broadcasting is going to adopt digital broadcasting. According to the Minister of Communication and Information Dr Sofyan Djalil, the trial for radio and television digital broadcast as well as digital TV in mobile phone is in progress.

Despite that it's not officially disclosed yet, as seen in the trial, Indonesia will implement Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) technology for its digital broadcast solution.

Speaking at the International Broadcast & Multimedia Expo (IBEX) 2006 today in The Westin Resort, Bali, Djalil stated that reforming both the broadcast and frequency spectrum into digital form will achieve qualified broadcasts as well as boost the country's broadcasting market.

This four-day expo and conference, which will be held until Saturday, is being attended by multimedia and broadcast industry, radio and television owners, the Government, students of university who are doing a broadcasting major, and advertising agencies.

According to the chairman of IBEX 2006, Yongki Manalu, in order to expand the latest knowledge and advance in the broadcast and multimedia business in the country, it would be appropriate for Indonesia to have a routine meeting forum just like other countries have done.

"The television and radio broadcast industry in Indonesia cannot avert themselves from the influences of other countries' broadcasting business development," said Manalu.

Indonesia has the second-biggest number of radio and television stations in the world after China. The country has one public TV, 10 national private TVs, 70 local private TVs, two cable TVs, one satellite TV, and more than 1,800 radio stations. Most of them, currently still using analog tecnology, will soon migrate to digital technology.

David Astley, Secretary general of the Asia Pacific Broadcast Union who also spoke at the conference, said that Indonesia is one of important broadcast markets in the region. "The migration process to digital broadcast that Indonesia has tried to implement now is urgently needed since the analog technology is dying," he added.
