Korean Wave washes over Indonesia's blogosphere

A heavy wave of popular Korean drama is currently hitting the Indonesian television industry. So it goes, too, in the ocean of blogosphere.

The hottest topic today in the country's blogosphere is the reaction to the sequel production of popular drama Princess Hours (Goong). Princess Hours is a drama that offers two types of fun: The romance arising between a noble prince and an ordinary girl, and the familiarity of all this happening in modern-day Korea. The controversy arose when it was rumored that Goong 2 would be performed by a different actor and actresses.

In a blog, namely Sinema Korea, a drama fan commented: "I’m happy to know there will be PH2 in this world. But my happiness is no longer when I know all the characters were changed! And then I'd like to Say No to Goong 2..."

The Korean Wave, a.k.a Hallyu or Hanryu, was first introduced in 2001 in China referring to the popularity of Korean culture in foreign countries. The "Hallyu" or Korean Wave began with the export of South Korean TV dramas such as Winter Sonata across East and Southeast Asia; the growing success of Korean dramas was shortly matched in the fields of movies and popular music. The other benchmark of Korean drama among others were Full House and Jewel in the Palace (Dae Jang Geum).

Sinema Korea is one of Indonesia's top blogs on Korean dramas. It posts any breaking news and synopsis about the latest Korean dramas and movies, and one of its posting about Princess Hours received more than 650 comments!

Another blog, All About Korea also writes about the latest news on Korean dramas. This blog also features an online poll about a certain topic on Korean dramas and online music players with Korean songs.

In the blog Korean Addict, visitors can find the original lyrics to Korean drama soundtracks as well as the Bahasa Indonesia translations.

However, following the boom of Korean dramas, more people in the region as well as other parts of the world have become interested in Korean culture and the language.

Actually, there are other Indonesian blogs which tell about Korean dramas and culture and their numbers will increase in the future due to more Korean dramas to come.

I myself learned many aspects of Korean culture from watching the drama. For example, I found that touching someone's head or talking while having food in one's mouth is not impolite in Korea. It's totally different from the habit we have here in Indonesia.

Another interesting thing is I can learn more about the latest and most favorite gadgets in Korea by viewing the drama. Maybe someday, my colleague Shashank Tripathi will have time to write details about it.
