Recipe for telecom consolidation

Delta and Northwest Airlines may be getting together in the US, with rumors of other possible carrier consolidations. This is always a good idea in a bloated industry with more players than necessary, especially so in economic hard times. Trouble ahead for Taiwan Yahoo!

You ever heard of Yahoo/Kimo? No, probably not. It's the local unit of Yahoo and it's a sign of what's wrong with the company.

It held a *press conference* (wonder how Jerry Yang would feel about that?) this week to announce a 30 percent uptick in revenue based on increased ad sales. This in the midst of economic uncertainty led by shrinking consumer and corporate spending. Read more »

Who will roll out NFC for mobile in Taiwan?

Last October, digital security company Gemalto announced a partnership with Taiwan's Far EasTone telecom to roll out trial and full-on near field communications (NFC) SIM card technology for contactless transactions. So how'd that all work out, you ask?

Well, this past week, Gemalto announced "...it has been chosen by Taiwan Mobile to provide the world's first commercial NFC (Near Field Communication) SIM-based mobile contactless system. It is designed to remotely manage the life-cycle of any type of contactless service within a mobile phone environment, especially payment applications that mandate high security levels" (www.hardwarezone.com).

And the survey says: Taiwan is a 3rd-world country!

The Institute for Information Industry, which besides having a grammatically challenged name, is apparently a Taiwan government department that does something... commissioning surveys and not much else. A branch of this branch, its Web site called--wait for it--"Foreseeing innovative new digiservices" (seriously!), has issued a study (done in August but not released until now!?) on mobile Internet and 3G penetration, etc. in Taiwan.

Betting the farm on Eee

Asustek has made waves worldwide with its "Eee" sub-notebook, which I find to be crapulent and not a good middle road between an iPod touch and a real notebook.

Now, the company is seemingly and, some would say, mistakenly, trying to expand the brand and take the Eee across hardware platforms.
