Intel launches three new processors, Taipei goes insane!
Sep 9, 2009 14:00Okay, maybe the last part was a bit over the top, but I know many folks who are excited the NDA is finally lifted and Intel has officially launched the latest CPU additions to the Core i7 and Core i5 families.
PC World has a detailed account of the launch, as well as the major Taiwanese manufacturers that are coming out with new P55 chipset motherboards.
Dozens of new motherboards built for the new Lynnfield microprocessors,
the Core i5-750, Core i7-860 and Core i7-870, were on display at the
Intel event in Taipei, launched by the leading makers, including
Asustek Computer, Gigabyte Technology, Micro-Star International (MSI),
Elitegroup Computer Systems and Foxconn Technology.
And while everyone in the industry knows that Intel operates a legal arm as mighty as Thor's hammer, there are some things that even they can't avoid.
The three new Intel desktop microprocessors all showed up at
Taipei's well-known Guang Hua computer market around the first week of
August, well ahead of the official launch.
Intel normally carefully controls the launch of new microprocessors, but the leak
apparently stumped the chip giant this time. Executives at the Taipei
launch acknowledged the early release in Taiwan, but didn't have many
ideas about how it happened.
"I guess people really wanted to
get their hands on these processors," said Stanley Huang, director of
advanced technical sales and services for Intel in the Asia Pacific
region.
It just shows how hungry Taiwan's PC users are for bleeding-edge technology. The fact that a brother or cousin or two works for one of the major motherboard partners helps as well.
I'm not qualified to go into the technical details of the new processors, but can point you to someone who can. The graphics do a good job of explaining how the architecture has evolved and why the Northbridge will disappear off the motherboard.

Great news! Now how soon can I get the latest and greatest processor in a notebook to replace my ASUS U6 (which I love)? I'm dying for a new computer but the only thing out there I would consider at the moment to replace my U6 would be the Sony Z48GD/X.
Wish ASUS would get busy with a new model soon!!
