What's hot in Barcelona?

Starting today, all the bigwigs in the cell phone industry will gather in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress.  While it's safe to assume that the economy will be on the tip of everyone's tongue, let's hope there's still some spark left in the old clunker.

Inside sources say to watch out for the Snapdragon. The first-generation chipset from Qualcomm has a fast 1GHz CPU, supports HSDPA, Wi-Fi, a 12-megapixel camera, HD video recording (720p), MobileTV (MediaFLO, DVB-H, and ISDB-T), and a "day-long battery life". The last point is a real clencher compared to what's currently on the market. Most 3G phones are loaded with features, but sadly, battery life is not one of them.

They'll also be announcing the Best Device of the Year in Barcelona. And the nominees are:

  • Nokia E71

  • LG KS360 "Tribe"

  • BlackBerry 9500 "Storm"

  • HTC G1

  • INQ1

My pick for best device would be the Nokia E71. Very solid build, sleek design, and I don't like touchscreens. While I wouldn't disagree if you told me that the G1 has the most potential, I think it's still a bit too raw for the industry.

Check your local geek Web site for all the winners later this week. In the meantime, have a gander at these pics from the geek Oscars.

i think the hottest item from Barcelona is the reported UNIVERSAL (phone) CHARGER via mini-USB that most of all handset manufacturer are going to implement in their range of phone models. that's good for everybody!

Good point ferdiei, I hadn't heard about that one. It will be nice to be able to plug in a neighbor's charger so I'm not stranded the next time. Oh and it looks like I was wrong about the E71 because the INQ1 won device of the year...I'd better stick to the day job!

actually, its the micro-USB going for standardization instead of the mini-USB that i stated. one way or another, i guess you're right we don't need to bother bringing our own charger everytime just to steal someone elses convenience of hooking-up to the plug someplace sometime. but dont forget to witch-off the power source once you're done, that another PLUS for the environment...but lets wait a few years before this comes into fruition(not the latter of course) but the 'charger' thing.
