The lynchmob lives... On Facebook

Yesterday's choice of viral video was unfortunately a rather horrible one (yours truly chose not to watch it)--a 15-minute video entitled "puppy abuse" was uploaded to Facebook. The video featured a brown poodle being made to do tricks repeatedly by a man and being punished severely for failing to stand successfully on its hind legs. Although how the video became uploaded is unclear (one account I read indicated it was on a flash drive found by a good Samaritan in KLCC, who found the video when she plugged the drive into her laptop), it has spawned quite the reaction in the online world, with Twitter and Facebook feeds being unleashed to find the culprits behind the abuse video (see Malaysian Insider story), who have been identified as a Chinese man with a tattoo and a woman.

A Facebook page has now appeared, naming and shaming the alleged culprits of the abuse of the dog (identified as "Sushi") but also linking to the Facebook page of the female who appears in the video. Some of the comments on the Facebook page (which names the male/female) are extremely inflammatory and borderline violent--almost a virtual mob as it were.

Of course, people say all kinds of things on the Internet but don't mean it. But certainly the level of violence threatened against these two individuals doesn't bode well, as well-intentioned and animal-loving as the people who have written the angry comments are.

The speed at which the alleged (and I say alleged because so much on Facebook has to be taken at face value and because, legally, it's the smart thing to do) culprits have been ID-ed would put the Royal Malaysian Police to shame. However, the fact that it was done through Facebook is a bit of a double-edged sword. You have to wonder who gave them up or was it simply someone discovered that amongst their circle of acquaintances was one of these two alleged culprits.

The way the evidence against the two alleged culprits is being compiled is also impressive (obviously, we are a generation of too much CSI). People are combing the the alleged culprits friends' lists, looking at their photographs and scanning their Wall comments, to build a case against the two alleged culprits. It's fascinating from a crowd-sourcing standpoint and certainly says a lot about how the Internet can really be a force in itself for fighting crime but also rather frightening from a "oh my god this is how much people can find out about you from Facebook" standpoint.

What is sad is that so much effort will be put into virtually lynching these two individuals, but as past Facebook "campaigns" have proven, not much effort, ultimately, will extend to the REAL campaign, in the real world, to get the lax laws on animal abuse in Malaysia amended.
