Windows 7 Thai launch party on October 31, but I already got my copy...
Oct 27, 2009 23:15The US has it, Japan just got it. Heck, I've had it for half a week now. No, it's not herps or H1N1. I'm talking about Windows 7. I could have sworn I saw a shop in Chiang Mai offering legitimate copies of Windows 7 Starter editions for 1,990 baht last weekend, but apparently, Microsoft is holding an event in Bangkok at Siam Paragon's Fashion Hall on the first floor on October 31 through to November 1.
Its Web site has a countdown clock (ooh ahhh), but more importantly, the company is offering a special price for Windows 7 Home Premium to anyone who registers at the site (http://www.windows7thailand.com/campaign/preorder2/register.aspx). The offer, by the way, ends Wednesday, October 28.
Now, upgrading my wife's computer from XP was not much of a hassle. After downloading the install files from the MS Web site, I unpacked the packages with the provided utility and copied the utility and managed to install everything from a 4GB USB drive. You can make a bootable CD with various utilities out there, but I did not once run into problems which have been reported by others with this same US$29 upgrade Student edition.
I'm glad to report that on the same machine, the official release seems to run much faster than the RC I had previously installed, only to uninstall upon my wife's request. This could be that it's a bit more streamlined due to it being the Home Pro version and not having all the features of the Ultimate edition which the RC was running. This may be just a psychological perception of an improvement in speed due to the fact that I paid money for this and my psyche is trying to convince my consciousness that it was, indeed, money well spent.
Anyway, it looks like this version is a keeper, unlike the two unused Vista Home Pro licenses I will soon be delegating to our backup machine and file server.

I have installed windows 7 Ultimate and I am very pleased with it....and much surprised because I had read so many poor reviews stating how it was just an update to Vista.
It starts and runs fast, is stable and I like the GUI and the extras that come with it. I even burned a DVD with the included software and it worked great.
The only down turn I see is the price.

Hi Montbkk. Great to hear that its working out for you. just curious though, have you had any hardware issues with it or has it managed to find all the necessary drivers?

The only driver I needed to download before the hardware would work was for my Creative Sound Card, an X-FI audio Extreme. Once downloaded the card works great and for some reason the sound is better than under Vista.
Windows 7 Install had drivers for everything else including my bluetooth dongle and Motorola Fax Modem. I was surprised because I'm running the 64 bit version but there are drivers for everything.

That is impressive, especially the the fax modem driver. Vista was a pain it could not find my MoBo's onboard sound drivers but I managed to get to work with XP drivers. However, it would occasionally prompt me to install the said drivers but not be able to locate the ones needed. Win7 had it working with no problems.
