Dr Money has US$5.5 million for me

I was recently contacted by a "Dr" (PhD?, MD?, DDS?) from an African nation who shall remain unnamed. He said there was a bank account which has been domant for the past seven years and which still has about US$5.5 million in it. He needed my help to get it out. I would have to keep this confidential. Well, you know how this goes.

The letter in itself is not surprising, but how it got to me is. It came via the CNET messaging system. This is not a dig at CNET's security as this apparently came from a registered member of the forums, so it could have been a hacked account or a number of other reasons this message came through.

What surprised me was that this person decided to do it here at CNET Asia. You see, this is a tech-oriented site and people who regularly read this site and are part of the forums are likely to be tech-savvy. Needless to say, members of the CNET Asia forums have read these emails countless of times, so why would this "person" decide that we would be easy targets?

Is he just playing a numbers game and targeting everyone possible simply to get to the magic number and possibly a hit?

It's annoying enough that these types of emails are still making their way around the Internet. Yet at the same time, you have to wonder what they're thinking trying to hit up tech sites like this.

Hi Jesada,
You never know what tricks these types have up there sleeves. The crooks always manage to match up to the new technologies available and swing it through all loop holes. By the time authorities catch up they have already managed to rip off plenty.
