747 supertanker at work
Sep 7, 2009 15:57The wildfires that plague California and other parts of the world are more tragic than a sight to behold. But once in a while, you'll see things that just boggle the mind during these events. Though not a real cutting-edge tech story, this Evergreen 747 supertanker recruited in fighting the California fires is an engineering marvel to watch in action.
No doubt, pilot skill plays a big part in this operation, but the technology behind the aircraft in just amazing.
Not your run-of-the-mill firefighting airplane that uses gravity to drop water on fires, this airplane uses pressurized water to shoot the crap out of those pesky flames.

Yes you right, I saw that on Nat Geo I think or maybe CNN. Amazing. That 747 has been around a long time and has done so many things such as carry the Shuttle piggyback style. I thought I read somewhere that there are plans to incorporate some of the Dreamliner technology into future 747s.

Additional info: I was partially right, there is a technology connection between the 787 Dreamliner and the new 747-8 family. Check this site:

sweetness. its cool that they'll still be making variations of the 747 even after/if they start to churn out the 787s.
