3G auctions closer than ever, guidelines due next Wednesday
Sep 3, 2009 22:58Either this time Thai officials are serious about the 3G airwaves auction or I've become the boy who cried wolf much too often. Media reports and confirmation from an official (who shall remain unnamed) close to the committee overseeing the allocation of the 2100MHz spectrum, which will carry the 3G services, say that this time it's for real.
US firm Nera had been hired to draw up the process for auctioning out the spectrum and its report is expected to be completed and submitted this coming Monday.
Up for grabs are four licenses for usage of the spectrum. Coincidentally, there are currently four major players in Thailand's mobile industry which happen to be on the GSM standard. Gets you thinking what all the fuss is about and why not just license directly to the carriers instead of having to go through all this bureaucracy!
As of now, AIS and TrueMove have working 3G networks in "limited testing" phase. AIS runs the 3GSM a.k.a. Super 3G in Chiang Mai, while TrueMove has a working network in downtown Bangkok as well as in the Cha-am/Hua Hin areas.

I'd say this is definitely a fact looking at all 3 company (AIS, DTAC, TRUE) shares rallying like never seen before in months.

Lets hope they manage to sort this out and not linger too long with the actual bidding process. Its taken this long to get out a method to just bid.
