"Find my iPhone" without paying for a MobileMe subscription

There has been a lot of talk about the the Find my iPhone feature, and recently, real-world proof that this does actually work, but only for MobileMe subscribers. Those without a MobileMe account seem to be left out in the cold and cannot benefit from this feature. Not willing to spend the US$60-$99 annual fee (depending on where you get the activation code from) or not sure if the service is worth the cost?

No worries, sign up for a FREE 60-day trial.

As with most online services, MobileMe has a try-for-free trial period, which is 60 days in this case. Simply sign up and make use of its features, including push email, PIM syncing, hosting, online storage and, of course, Find my iPhone. Once the trial period is over, simply sign up for another trial to continue to test this feature until you are sure you can decide whether or not you want to subscribe.

There are a few sticking points, however. You have to enter your credit card details so you must make sure to cancel the account before the 60-day period is over or they will automatically put a charge on your card. Signing up with the same credit card for multiple accounts may not work. Personally, I have not tried this.

Just wondering if there's any privacy issues concerning this "Find my iPhone" feature? A smart hacker might somehow find a way to track your movements or am I just being paranoid?

@scoobydoo,
I think your concern is legitimate. But like Google Latitude, you can always turn this feature off. You can go so far as to turn off Location Services completely which should disconnect GPS functionality from all the apps. As long as these devices come with tracking features turned off by default, I'm ok with it.

@Jesadac: This has nothing to do with "Find My iPhone", but since we're on the subject. Can a hacker track your movements when you're using a normal GSM phone, like they do in some Hollywood movies? TIA
