Hands on with an iPhone 3G running 3.0

Not since Ford released the 5.0 Mustang has anything with a name containing a number ending in point "O" excited so many people like the new iPhone 3.0 firmware. So, while visiting a friend who is a developer, I was lucky to get my hands on an iPhone 3G with the final 3.0 firmware and quickly ran through some of the features I have been waiting for.

Before doing anything,  I hooked it up to my MacBook and restored a backup of my iPhone settings and files. While my iPhone is still being synced with my music and videos, we'll take a look at iTunes and Mobile Me.

1. iTunes
The first thing you notice after you update to 3.0 is not the changes to the iPhone, which is still restoring from your backup. In iTunes, you'll see that your software version is 3.0 and there is now another checkbox item under the Options menu for encrypting your backups. Once you check the box, you will be presented with a popup asking you to set a password for your backups. Under "Info", there is a new option to sync Notes. Aside from that, there is no noticeable difference in your syncing options under iTunes.

2. Mobile Me
First, dive into Settings > Mail, Contacts Calendars > (your mobile me email account), and switch "Find my iPhone" on.

Moving over to Mobile Me's Options page, you'll notice that there is a new icon which appears as the last item, the Locate My iPhone application. This is not the result of the update, but rather, Apple's addition shortly after the June 8 event.

Hit that menu item and it takes you to a maps page where it automatically attempts to locate where your iPhone is. I suspect this utilizes Bonjour to get to your iPhone's GPS data via the Internet. How long it takes to locate your iPhone probably depends on how long it takes to get a good GPS fix as well, so be patient. This did not seem to work for me. I suspect this may not be turned on yet possibly due to the firmware not supposed to be out yet. Or it could be my GPRS connection and not being able to get to a faster connection right now.

Display a Message and Remote wipe also failed. I'll have to try these Mobile Me-based features once this is officially out and I have a decent connection.

3. Voice Memos
Using this app is straightforward. Record is on the bottom left, Stop/list is on the bottom right. There is a cool VU meter between them, which seems to actually work and twitches depending on the level of what you're recording. Hitting this List button takes you to a list of your saved memos. A Share button and Delete button are located at the bottom of the list screen. Hitting the Share button bring up options to send the memo via MMS or email. Selecting the little arrow next to any memo takes you to the details page noting length, date and time recorded. There is also a trim Memo button which launches the Edit window allowing you to edit and trim down your memo. Hitting the Share button brings up the same menu as before.

undefined

4. Finder
Finder appears as a mall icon just above the dock. Hitting that icon, swiping your screen to the right, or hitting the Home key once brings up the finder application. Simply enter a search query and off it goes. It's that easy. Just like the Mac version, it starts to search for matches as soon as you start typing. The more characters you type in, the shorter the list of potential results gets. Tapping the results opens up the app which it appears in.

5. Thai language support
This is something I've been simply annoyed by ever since the iPhone was being officially sold in Thailand, but there was no way for me to type in Thai without jailbreaking or purchasing an app which worked only for SMS composing.

Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards

Switch on Thai or any of the keyboards you want to enable, and presto, the international keyboard icon is enabled on the keyboard, which changed my keyboard to Thai when clicked.

6. Landscape keyboard
Works as promised. No big difference. It works just as it always has in Safari.

7. Streaming video in Safari
Relying on GPRS(!!!!) I did not dare try this yet. Will try to get a Wi-Fi connection a bit later to test this out.

8. CUT, COPY & PASTE
This header deserves to be in all caps because it is a feature that people have been bitching about for the past two-plus years. So, doing a bit of multitouch dragging and scrolling, I was able to successfully copy-and-paste some text from today's copy of CNET Asia's Home Entertainment newsletter. Long tapping anywhere on the screen allows you to select the highlighted text or select all. Doing so again lets you copy or cut, and the third time around lets you paste what you've just copied/cut.

9. MMS
Clicking on the Messages icon opens up the SMS/MMS app. You're prompted to enter your number in order to get the app to work. MMS messages appear as any other messages do, threaded into contacts/numbers. Clicking the Create message icon takes you to a redesigned message template. On top is the recipient list with a "+" button to add multiple recipients. The middle is where your conversation history will appear, and any media inserted will also appear here. Just below is a camera icon which when tapped, will ask you to either take a new picture or Choose Existing media. The former automatically launches the camera app. The latter takes you to your picture albums. Hit Send and the MMS slowly makes it way across your network (no 3G for this in my area just yet).

Diving deeper into the settings General > Network > Cellular Data Network gets you to the data settings and MMS settings. These can be changed to match your carrier's settings. Sending to my work phone on a different carrier was no more difficult than with any other MMS-capable phone.

10. Bluetooth
Turning on the Bluetooth "switch" automatically starts the search for nearby devices. I was able to automatically pair the Sony DR-BT21G in less than 5 seconds and did not need to enter any passcode.

Clicking the little arrow next to the device status brings you to a submenu with a Forget this Device option. With headset paired, I doved into the iPod application.

Watching today's episode of CNET's Loaded, I was pleasantly surprised to find that audio was automatically channeled to the headset without the need for any other settings to be changed. It should be noted that despite full control being given to the headset's control buttons (Next, Volume, Play, Pause, Seek), the controls with the exception of volume still works from the iPhone.

Audio is consistently piped to the headset in any app you may be using as long as the headset is paired and turned on. Phone calls came in loud and clear, but this is also dependent on the quality of your headset. However, I did notice that when paired with the iPhone, I did not experience the drips and interference that was plaguing this headset when paired with my Nokias and even with my MacBook.

11. iTunes Store
As promised, a Movie, TV Show and Music Video section appearing under the "videos" icon has been added to the iTunes Store app. I did not test this feature out just yet because of my slow connection, but have no reason to doubt it would work.

12. Syncing Notes
Well, you don't need to see the contents of my notes, but I can assure you that this does work. A permission screen pops up with the proposed changes for you to accept, just as syncing with iCal does.

Last minute updates:
1- Mobile Me's Display a Message, Where's my iPhone, and Remote Wipe works! Network congestion seemed to be the culprit the first time around
2- Slightly slower overall performance but not as bad if you don't load up with too many screens of apps.
3- Have yet to find where i can enable push notifications. If its already enabled, then it doesn't seem to work. I've updated quite a few apps to their latest version which supposedly support push notifications but no joy still.

Is the iPhones 3.0 Update released already? Thought it's supposed to be on June 17th? BTW, thanks for the review. I've got it bookmarked for later when I actually get my hands on a 3GS.

Jesadac says...
Hi Scoobydoo,
It was released to developers but not officially released to the general public yet. There are ways to get it (apparently someone leaked it) through "trackers" but I do not advise our readers to download that because there is no way to tell if the file you get is the real deal or if its hiding something malicious.
You're getting the 3GS!!! Thats great!!! Do let us know how it works out for you.

Jesadac says...
Also worth a mention is that with my 2.x iPhone 3G, I was able to hook up some non-chipped dock connector accessories and they would work properly but on the 3.0 iPhone, anything without an authentication chips does not roll at all.

ShiningStar says...
@Jesadac: The update seems a bit disappointing. Some of those features should have been there to begin with and other features seem less substancial. Unoffcial accesories don't work seems make it a bit more upsetting.

Jesadac says...
Hi ShiningStar,
All part of my love-hate relationship with Apple products. Nothing revolutionary most of the time but their implementation (or is it marketing hype) just makes it more fun and interesting to play with.

If iPhone Bluetooth is ON, can other device acces to iPhone without entering the passcode?, I'm worry about bluejacking activity.

teedo says...
@Jesadac Hi, does the tethering work on True Move yet? I will be traveling to Thailand in 2 days and was curious if tethering will be supported by True. Thanks for the great article!

Jesadac says...
@rosgani
The iphone will be visible to other devices only when you are in the bluetooth setup screen under settings>general>bluetooth. If you are not in that screen, other devices cannot see your iPhone even if Bluetooth is turned on.

Jesadac says...
@teedo
Yes as of now. I don't think there will be any changes to this as they offer unlimited data access with their iPhone plans.

ShiningStar says...
@Jesadac: I agree with you there. Did you get to try out video streaming?

Jesadac says...
@ShiningStar
Yes. It worked well over Wifi, well, except flash based videos but thats another rant in itself ;-)

Jesadac says...
Those upgrading (most people I assume) should be forewarned that using A2DP with wireless on is a real battery killer. An obvious statement but well worth mentioning since many people are using this as their main phone for personal and business.

I can't get my Sony DR-BT21G Bluetooth headset to pair with my iPhone 3G. I currently have version 3.0. Any tips?

Thanks.

Jesadac says...
Hi pnguyen777
I suggest you put the headset into "available" mode. Start with it turned off. Hold the ON/OFF button until it turns on and keep it held down for another 5 seconds. The light will start to flash at regular interval. Then turn on the iPhone's bluetooth and it should automatically pair. If this does not work, try resetting the headset.

Update #2
Push notifications (assuming the menu toggle too) will be available once push-capable apps/updates are released and installed, which should be after the official release of 3.0

ShiningStar says...
@Jasadac: Forgot to ask, does the camera support video recording?

Jesadac says...
@shiningstar
nope. The camera on the 3g will not record video with this firmware.

Hi Jesada,
Firstly I would like to thank you for your very helpful posts, it’s exactly what I’ve been trying to find out. I do not have an iphone at the mo but I’m seriously considerating. The dilemma is to get the 3G and upgrade the firmware, or just get the 3GS.
I know the 3GS offers faster speed, better battery life, camera etc, but I don’t really see a massive improvement/ upgrade for me to get the 3GS, the things that I really want can be done by a software upgrade. My question is while you were playing around with the 3.0 software on your 3G, did you experience any lagging (especially in contacts and keyboard modes?) I’ve done research and have found that this seems to be the problem with iphone 3G. Has it been fixed with the 3.0?
Maybe I should bite the bullet and get the 3GS. Do you know when it will be available in Thailand? For how much? Your input will be much appreciated
Thanks
Pim

Using the Spotlight feature to search for information on the phone is what I am looking for. I know it will be limited in 3.0 . If I have a contact with a Note like "Met in NYC, USA." If I search for NYC, will it find the contact?

Jesadac says...
@pimmy5
Yes, there is a noticeable (and sometimes unbearable) lag when the 3G is upgraded to 3.0 Apps seem to respond a bit slower and there seems to be a delay with registering keyboard taps. TrueMove are still unsure of the pricing but the new 3G S will be coming in at a higher price than the current 3G models which will be sold in tandem. This could mean that the 3G models drop in price and the 3G S comes in to fill the current price slots, or there are no discounts for current models and the new ones just come in at a higher price.
Any, which one you decide on depends on your budget, but if money is not a big factor, I suggest you go for the 3G S as its hardware is capable of making full use of the 3.0 firmware and its features and there will not likely be any performance issues as the 3G is currently experiencing with 3.0 installed.

Jesadac says...
@nmprofessional
I gave that a try and spotlight could not find any matches in my contact's notes field for the search phrase. A real bummer if you as me.

Jesadac says...
Installed a push-capable app and the "Notifications" tab appeared magically in settings. This seems to be working as I seem to be getting some Tap Tap challenges from some random person....

pimmy5 says...
Hi,
One last question, was the 3.0 you upgraded to BETA or the one that's coming out this week?
Thanks

Jesadac says...
@pimmy5
This is my friend's copy of the version they released during the WWDC event which is the same as the one that is coming out in a few hours.

@all
That iPhone is now back with him as I wait for the update to become available and to update my own iPhone. Hopefully all that lag was caused by all his fiddling around due to the nature of his work and my upgrade will not cause my own iPhone to be so slow. Fingers crossed....

pimmy5 says...
Thanks for that, hope you don't mind a quick update later once your phone is updated, let us know if it still lagged or was faster than before.
Thanks

Jesadac says...
@pimmy5
It'll be my pleasure.

ShiningStar says...
If anyone care, the Iphone firmware 3.0 is online while the Ipod Touch firmware is missing.

Jesadac says...
Thanks for the heads up Shiningstar. Finally home after a looooong day, now to have some fun.

Jesadac says...
Its rumored to go live at 1:00pm EST, thats about 2 hours away. I may wait until tomorrow. With all the people hitting "update" every few minutes, I expect that the servers will no doubt be clogged like contestants' intestines after a Nathan's hotdog eating contest.

ShiningStar says...
@Jesadac: I'm guessing 3.0 7A341 firmware is the beta. I've been checking for Ipod touch firmware on apple's firmware xml, there's still nothing there.

Jesadac says...
@shiningstar,
hows it working for you?

Jesadac says...
No big difference in performance after installing 3.0
All features I had played with above all appear and work as they did during the review.

ShiningStar says...
@Jesadac: I was trying install 3.0 I kept ending up on recovery screen. After reinstall I managed to get it to work, but it has some strange glitches. Out of nowhere from a boot I get the recovery icon and I have to connect to Itunes to make it boot. I get some slow downs on menu. I have noticed the battery last a bit longer than 2.2.1. I think I'll try a reinstall on a friend's firmware.

By the way, the one you reviewed was actually the final version.

Jesadac says...
@shiningstar,
Interesting outcome you have there. Most problem I've heard of were from Apple's activation servers being overwhelmed. When you go to reinstall, you may want to make sure that your battery is charged up to at least 75% before doing a restore/update, just in case. After you've updated and its gone through the restart/reboot and restore process, keep the iPhone plugged in and leave itunes running until you get the message on itunes that sync is complete. This should help to avoid most problems.
Good luck!

teddyt says...
@Jesadac: Thanks for the review. Can you please confirm that the DR-BT21G headset's controls work with iPhone 3.0 without using the dongle? The forward/back (skip) controls do not work on my headset without using the dongle. Pause/Play and volume does work though.

Jesadac says...
@teddyt,
Now that you've brought this up, I did try on my iphone and can confirm that volume and Pause/Play seem to be working but no forward/back. I went back to my friend's iPhone and was able to use the forward/back buttons. We updated his phone to the 17 June release of 3.0 and lost that ability. After doing a option+restore and putting the pre-release version back on, the forward/back buttons no longer worked. Either his messing around with APIs the first time around somehow made the buttons register or we had a very lucky accident. He's going to look more into this...

ShiningStar says...
@Jesadac: Thanks. I made it work on my friend's copy of the firmware. I figured out the firmware was somewhere corrupt, I think the servers being overloaded ended up that way. I tried some application they worked fine, but some were a bit slow then usual. Overall the firmware seems fine, but decieded to downgrade to 2.2.1 until the next update.

madu49 says...
Hello Iam the same I cannot get the forward / back to skip to work which is very annoying have you found a solution yet

Jesadac says...
hi madu49,
No solution yet as AVRCP is not supported in 3.0

Jesadac says...
IMHO, I think apple has not enabled AVRCP because they still want us to whip out the iphone/ipods to switch tracks and scan through songs. It gets the product noticed as opposed to having it hidden in a pocket or bag being controlled by the headset.

khunlouis says...
HI K. Jesadac - it's been awhile, hope you are well. Did you notice that the wi-fi signal seems weaker on your iphone? I have two iphones, my wife's is still on 2.2 mine on 3 - we have airport set up in the house and in some areas, the 2.2 handset has full signal while the 3.0 is on Edge.

Read some other forums and they said to reset the Network in General settings. That didn't work for me. Just a strange thing or is it just my iphone has a weak antenna from the start??

Jesadac says...
Hi khunlouis,
I'm great, thanks. Hope you're well too...
I have not noticed any problems with my wifi but there are many reports of this happening to a lot of people after upgrading their 3G to 3.0

Hopefully this will be resolved with some sort of patch or update that will not take too long to be released.

scoobydoo says...
@Jesadac & khunlouis: Apple recently released a firmware upgrade to their Airport routers. Not sure if that will solve your problem, though.

khunlouis says...
@Jesadac & scoobydoo - thanks for your feedback. The Airport update didn't help - may be it's just me. I can't tell outside of home whether the wifi is better or worst as never monitored - though I could always take the two and compare but my wife will probably think I am going over board over some radio waves and would not be amused nor would my daughter who loves to lick the iphones. Lovely. Thanks again.

ShiningStar says...
@Khunlouis: I think people are getting weird results from the 3.0. I had issues with mine, try downloading the firmware again and restore it. The second time it worked for me, but mine was lagging in setting menu and in some applications. If you're still bothered you always downgrade to 2.2.1 like me.

khunlouis says...
@ShiningStar - thanks for the tip. Didn't reconsider reinstalling the OS. Will give it a try. Cheers.
