CAT & TOT launch pre-emptive strike

Feeling the pressure from the oncoming 3G auctions, TOT and CAT, Thailand's current wireless concessions holders, have joined forces. AIS, DTAC and TrueMove are licensing TOT and CAT concessions and are being held back from developing a nationwide 3G network as they do not have the rights to do so outside their current frequency allocations.

This appears to be a pre-emptive strike against the privately held telecoms giants' bid to launch Thailand's first 3G network which is currenty being held back by the Telecoms Commission's unwillingness to finally hold a bid. IMHO, right or wrong, it's just another tactic to secure the Government's interests as Thailand's Treasury Ministry holds a controlling stake in both communications entities.

Voice TV fuels political fire

With the launch of Thailand's newest Internet TV station, a new round of political mud slinging is bound to happen. Headed by Songsak Premsuk (formerly of iTV) with Ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra's son at his side, it's not hard to figure out why www.voicetv.co.th is drawing so much criticism from Thailand's current administration and from the general public.

A cooler way to power up, the PowerMat

It's taken the better part of a month to arrive all the way from New York, but the PowerMat has made its way into my hands and I've just completed a round of testing.

What is the PowerMat? Simply put, it is a device which charges your gadgets without the need to plug in your gadgets to a power outlet, though with the help of an adapter hardware. It uses magnetic induction to get power to your gadgets. No, this does not mean you walk into your house and your gear magically starts to charge. But you put your gadget on the PowerMat and do not have to plug it in. Simple drop-and-charge for a quick grab and go.

Thailand tackles online censorship again

Prathet Thai, or land of the free, is what Thailand is called in the Thai language. Land of the free (and home of the brave) also defines the US. As the US went through a post-9/11 re-evaluation of what freedom would require to be sacrificed, ironically, to protect the country's values and way of life. For Thailand, we have not had any external attacks on our country or way of life. Rather, as it pushes forward in socio-technological development, long-standing values and customs often clash with the modern interpretation of freedom.

As more and more of its people become connected and better educated, it is inevitable that they develop their own thoughts, opinions and interpretation of freedom.

Windows 7 Thai launch party on October 31, but I already got my copy...

The US has it, Japan just got it. Heck, I've had it for half a week now. No, it's not herps or H1N1. I'm talking about Windows 7. I could have sworn I saw a shop in Chiang Mai offering legitimate copies of Windows 7 Starter editions for 1,990 baht last weekend, but apparently, Microsoft is holding an event in Bangkok at Siam Paragon's Fashion Hall on the first floor on October 31 through to November 1.

Its Web site has a countdown clock (ooh ahhh), but more importantly, the company is offering a special price for Windows 7 Home Premium to anyone who registers at the site (http://www.windows7thailand.com/campaign/preorder2/register.aspx). The offer, by the way, ends Wednesday, October 28.
