Thailand tackles online censorship again

Prathet Thai, or land of the free, is what Thailand is called in the Thai language. Land of the free (and home of the brave) also defines the US. As the US went through a post-9/11 re-evaluation of what freedom would require to be sacrificed, ironically, to protect the country's values and way of life. For Thailand, we have not had any external attacks on our country or way of life. Rather, as it pushes forward in socio-technological development, long-standing values and customs often clash with the modern interpretation of freedom.

As more and more of its people become connected and better educated, it is inevitable that they develop their own thoughts, opinions and interpretation of freedom.

Windows 7 Thai launch party on October 31, but I already got my copy...

The US has it, Japan just got it. Heck, I've had it for half a week now. No, it's not herps or H1N1. I'm talking about Windows 7. I could have sworn I saw a shop in Chiang Mai offering legitimate copies of Windows 7 Starter editions for 1,990 baht last weekend, but apparently, Microsoft is holding an event in Bangkok at Siam Paragon's Fashion Hall on the first floor on October 31 through to November 1.

Its Web site has a countdown clock (ooh ahhh), but more importantly, the company is offering a special price for Windows 7 Home Premium to anyone who registers at the site (http://www.windows7thailand.com/campaign/preorder2/register.aspx). The offer, by the way, ends Wednesday, October 28.

An open letter...

Dear friends

Since the conception of sending out paper with writing to each other in the form of mail, companies have been taking advantage of this system to throw in advertisements and other material which are deemed junk mail. With the move toward digital mail, more doors have started to open for individuals to start sending out junk email, or spam, at even lower costs.

Now, there is not only your average junk email from online merchants and advertisers, there are also those annoying emails which claim to give you money for each person you forward the email to (just because Bill Gates is that nice a guy), or the Thai Government is going to block access to Hotmail/Live Mail due to emails being used to communicate and coordinate anti-government protests, so someone (insert medical emergency here) and someone rich will give them a dollar for each email address that the email is sent to.

Facebook ban in the City of London

While sifting through the hundreds of headlines at work today, I couldn't help but notice this particularly interesting article from the Telegraph, which reports that over two-thirds of businesses in the City of London are banning access to Facebook. The reason behind all this is that employers fear that staff are constantly on social-networking site and wasting away precious time which could be better devoted to actually working and increasing overall productivity.

BlackBerry fever in Thailand? How'd that happen?

While more evolutionary than revolutionary, RIM has just released BBM 5.0 in its App World store. Readers outside of Thailand may not be too interested in this, but because BB fever has swept over Thailand, a lot of my fellow countrymen (and women) will probably find this useful. Talking to most people, I did not deem it surprising that most non-business users are more attracted by the social-networking apps, specifically Facebook and BBM, than in its email capabilities.

I'm not saying that they do not use it for email. A lot of people do. But few are using the BB for what people regard it as best for--which is email.
