eBay to sell Skype's shares to private investor

News broke out yesterday that eBay has agreed to sell 65 percent of Skype's shares to a private investor group led by Silver Lake, for a cool US$2 billion. However, the online marketplace giant still holds 35 percent of the remaining Skype shares.

It's been known that through the years since eBay acquired Skype in 2005, nothing much has been done to promote or grow the product. Skype has since been on an "auto pilot" mode.

Hence, the sale is beneficial for both eBay and Skype as this lessens the load off the online marketplace giant, allowing it to focus on other businesses. Skype, on the other hand, stands to benefit from Silver Lake's technological expertise.
