The iPhone 3G temptation is too great

So the friend (Jak) I was telling you about on the iPhone 3G craze finally caved in. He got the iPhone 3G from SingTel over the weekend, much to my disappointment after my long spiel with him earlier.

After complemplating for a few day, he finally decided to sign on for two years and part with S$508 to the big RED. Up till today, there are two guys I know who are iPhone 3G owners in Singapore.

Jak and his new 3G iPhone

Here's my interview with Jak.

Suzz: Why did you decide to get the 3G iPhone?
Jak's confession: I decided to buy it a couple of months ago. I tried the Web-browsing function on the iPod touch (which I have to use Wi-Fi only), and I liked it. But the iPod touch doesn't provide the 3G function. So the iPhone 3G must be my choice.

Suzz: So which phone package did you subscribe to under SingTel? And are you happy with the price plans offered?
Jak: I choose iFlexi Value, paid S$508 for the iPhone, and S$56 for the monthly fee + 1GB GPRS. I've read many bloggers who say the price plans suck. I partly agree, especially since 1GB of data is was too low for me. But SingTel didn't give me many choices.

Suzz: How do you find the new iPhone 3G? Any raves/comments or unhappiness about it so far?
Jak: I found it very useful since I am an Internet addict. I always get online all the time. I check my Yahoo! Mail, check my friend's status on Twitter and Facebook. The handphone itself is ok. But I am still waiting for the next firmware update from Apple which allows me to use the SMS function much better than this. I think the SMS function still needs a little more improving. But overall, I love it!

Suzz: Do you think a two-year contract is fair for the price you paid for the phone? Any comments on making the price plans better?
Jak: It's a little bit too long for me, but this is the advantage that SingTel wants to get from iPhone fans, the "extra price" they have to pay for the privilege of getting the iPhone 3G early. SingTel didn't force us to buy the iPhone 3G. And since we bought it, we shouldn't complain too much. But if SingTel really wants to engage new subscribers (like myself), I'd suggest it offers me better services and privileges, suchas discounts on application purchase, allow me to buy music with a local credit card, and aftersales services.

Suzz: Were you an original SingTel user? If not, which telco did you switch from?
Jak: I switched from StarHub which I've been with for 1.5 years. StarHub gives me good service, but its price plans are so expensive. I use Twitter at 17MB per month, and StarHub charges me nearly S$200 each month (this price includes a few bucks on my voice service). SingTel's come up with a better plan and the iPhone 3G. So it's a good time to move on.

Congratulations on your iPhone 3G. I think the iPhone will appeal more to a greater mass market if it is not tied to a certain carrier, and the development platform on iPhone is an open platform. This way, more people can get the iPhone, and more developers can develop great apps for the iPhone. I believe what makes the iPhone different is the way it revolutionizes the mobile platform.
