Daum Pie: Thinking within the box(es)

Trust Korea to take a concept--photo sharing--and put a cute little creative spin on it. Daum, the second biggest Kahuna among Korean portals, offers Daum Pie, a unique service for sharing photos.

Daum Pie

The twist: You don't simply upload your pictures. You do it as a part of a theme, by filling in frames called "Pies". Pick a theme of interest, and start filling out the frames. When all the frames are done, the Pie is deemed complete. The Puzzle is solved.

The best bit: The Puzzle when completed is accessible as a neatly rendered Flash file for people to link to, as below. The photographs in the grid are clickable and point to a larger image.

Not a big deal, but a sweet little idea for a collaborative photo-sharing service. Of course, the most popular type of content remains collages of popular female celebrities. I am not exactly first out of the gate with this information as Daum started this site about this time last year.

But the competition heated up recently when Naver launched a competing service, the Naver Nemo.

The first thing that hits you about these services in comparison with their global counterparts is the sheer design thinking that goes into them. The interfaces rock. Click around in the Flash content area above. The idea may be simple, but it is executed to perfection.

About Shashank Tripathi

Shashank Tripathi, nicknamed Shanx, believes that a rocking hammock, a good book, and a tall glass of strawberry milkshake are the way to save the planet. But that does not fill all the hours in a day, so he cuts his teeth on digital advertising and media, spending a good part of his life expressing opinions as though they were going out of fashion, or drawing boxes that connect to each other with shiny black arrows. Occasionally, he has also been accused of poetry.

Locus: Based in Singapore, but a devout jetrosexual.
Focus: Media, Advertising, Ubicomp, All things Digital.
Other: LinkedIn, Facebook
