Finally! Globe will release the iPhone 3G on August 22
Aug 6, 2008 16:44Well I guess the cat's out of the bag. Globe's Web site already has news of the release date and plans associated with the iPhone 3G... and bloggers aren't happy!
Already, a number of my twitter mates and tech blog contacts are saying the iPhone package is waaaay overpriced (US$1,115 for the iPhone 3G or around 48,000 pesos).
For more info on the Globe packages, simply visit the Globe iPhone 3G page.
So what do you think? About time? Will you be getting one as well?..

i am gonna wait until early next year. Globe is just taking advantage of the situation of having no competition. its too overpriced, even the plans. why can't we have a low end plan with the option of having unlimited 3G data? too expensive...
maybe people in the Philippines like me can sign a petition to steve jobs like what the canadians did? but i highly doubt it knowing filipino people. hehehehe....

vendor says 200 USD, operator saya 1000 USD
Well, I guess this is marketing.
I'll just wait when the competion arrive from smart, maybe they'll have a much more practical price.

AT&T offers the iPhone 3G for $199 + a 2 year contract. the lowest plan on AT&T for the iPhone is USD 69.99/month (P3,700/month)
Globe offers the iPhone 3G for free on plan 5000 or higher (USD113/month) on a 2 year contract
The prepaid (w/o contract) is USD 955 and you get 5 months of free load. (USD 4.50/month)

I though the iphone 3G's supposed to be cheaper? This a wrong move for Globe, they'll bring down the price later on, bcoz i think few people will bite in to this gimmick.

It's highway robbery! I was thinking that they might sell it for about 15k, which wouldn't have been that bad. But over 40k (prepaid) is just too much! Globe is taking advantage of the situation too much! I sincerely hope that people won't get the iPhone from Globe. They cannot be rewarded for such tactics.

Thought of getting one as a birthday gift to myself... however if what you say about the price is true. Then, it may become more of a "status symbol" gadget to have... not a very positive image to display, especially, when no less than 32% of our people are living below the poverty line... If not, it would most likely be a "theft" magnet.

I can't agree more with scarabrei: this is downright criminal. True, as the official distributor of IPhone, Globe can do as it pleases. But then, as a consumer-client, I cannot help but be appalled by Globe Telecom's GREED. From $200 to $1115! That's more than 300% difference.
jaspertang's suggestion of writing a petition letter is worth considering...
One can hope that "competition" coming from the black market exact it's "karma" on Globe for being opportunistic and greedy.

how can I buy that? its too expensive from US$199 now is US$1.1k equevalent of 50k in Philippines pesos, wag nalang, even the riches people around we are not stupid to buy iPhone.. boo boo

This is outright wrong. Not just highway robbery, autobahn robbery ! Too bad Smart can't come out with the Iphone since Globe has the exclusive contract c/o Singtel in Singapore. Smart has always had the more competitively priced cellphone models with the plans, but Globe's target market is really the class A-A/B people who can afford it.
Should they sell units of the Iphone 3G, it's going to be a clear testament of how life is in the Philippines.

With the majority of Pinoys reeling from the economic crisis, this phone is of the lowest priority, only the filthy rich and those wise (sic) enough to part with their hard-earned cash for the sake of style will get their paws on this. Good luck to them.

Hey guys, get your facts straight before you complain. The $199 price comes with contract. If you compare the AT&T plans with the ones of globe, it is not far off, like johnanthony77 says, the cheapest plan comes out to 3,700. The closest plan to that in Globe is 3999 where the iphone will cost you 5,600. That's less than $199. Stop comparing the price of prepaid with the $199 price with contract.

Well as what Steve Jobs said on the World Wide Developers Conference 2008, they're making the iPhone 3G more affordable to the countries mentioned including the Philippines,,. and it's just so disappointing that globe will be selling the iPhone at the rate of 30K and up, now the question, "is it now affordable for such consumers of 3rd world countries?" well of course not!
hope that they will be reducing the price for example 20k below, just like $199 SRP in the US,. =)
Nov 15, 2008 21:45
$199 is not srp or retail price. $199 is with contract. You get the phone for almost the same price with plan in globe. The way i see it, what globe needs to do is to give iphone subscribers unlimited data plans like they do in the U.S. My bill has more than doubled since i got mine.

In addition to adrian21186's list...
the Iphone 3g cannot forward SMS... it's not a heavy texter's phone... =)
