Consumer LCD TV LED backlighting explained: Quick and dirty

A friend asked me about LED backlighting information and misinformation. Especially with some bad people publicizing the great lies about the greatness of Edgelit LED lighting. I just wanted to clear up some misinformation.

The two links below, I agree in the light of my limited conversations with panel makers away from marketing people.

LED TVs compared: Local dimming versus edgelit--good introduction to the competing technologies. Excerpt:

"In our tests, we liked local dimming best of the three backlighting methods, and rank the so-equipped TVs below among the best LCDs we've ever reviewed. In comparison, the edgelit models exhibited relatively poor uniformity and backlight fluctuations that can definitely be distracting--although a new firmware update by Samsung is aimed at correcting this issue."

LED-backlit LCDs battle for "best" title--Now that we know that "edge" is not the last word in image quality, this article details backlighting technology, including the best method of backlighting using three color LEDs instead of the white LED they use in most backlight stuff. Excerpt:

Sony's LEDs are arranged in groups of four, with two green and one each red and one blue. The advantage, according to the company, is "significantly elevated color purity". A demo I saw of Sony's new LED-based models last summer looked impressive, indeed, and CNET contributor Kevin Miller, for his part, said "the blacks on the new XBR8 series look to be the best of any LCD that I have seen to date by a good margin."
