Gmail's sweet spam-fighting record and how you can help
Oct 30, 2007 10:05
Google's spam engineers have just added a nice short blogpost here. It's a "state of the service" report, but it does show a very believable graph above on how little spam reaches us. Most importantly, though, they've a nice video at the bottom of the blogpost for those of us with ADHD.
The most important message: SELECT the spam in your inbox, and REPORT SPAM, and do your bit in the battle against spam. C'mon, if you care enough to buy organic food and use low carbon emission products, care enough to do this bit, too!
My own testimony: Gmail has made email usable again. It has saved our company from the drudgery of spending 30 minutes deleting spam everyday. I have 4,500 pieces of spam in my spambox and 6.25 hours of my life is saved by Gmail. Multiply that with the 50 guys I have in my office and that's substantial.
Yeah, you can go on and on about "REAL MEN DON'T USE SPAMKILLERS" in the same vein as "REAL MEN DRIVE MANUAL CARS" and "REAL MEN USE COMMAND LINE INTERFACE, NOT GUIs". But then if you use Windows at home what does that make you? A closet "not so real man"?
