Shanghai through the eyes of a "Malaysian bumpkin"

I'm in Shanghai for a week on vacation. I don't travel often on a free-and-easy vacation often at all. Shanghai is funny. Kinda place for geeks. I got an excellent piece of screensaver installed on my camera, customized fit, by the side of a river, in (where's this?) Qida? for US$1.50. Excellent fit it was, too.

Besides naturally techie geeky stuff. it was rather amazing that considering the number of these vehicles on the road, it wasn't too much of a carbon monoxide hazard. Then I realized why. There were much fewer gas-guzzling two-stroke motorbikes on the road. There was a phenomenal number of bikes in the city limits, most, if not all, of them, were run by LPG or electricity-driven!

In the West, there's so much talk about being green and stuff. Apparently, the Chinese don't need to actually promote too much of an eco angle. They just make it practical.

I'll be posting pics from a Malaysian country bumpkin's point of view over the next few days. Stay tuned.

Welcome to China! Those 'electric bikes' (ie: lightweight electric scooters) are pretty nifty. The battery is not exactly light, but it's removable so you can take it out and charge just the battery in your home/office. You can easily try one if you go into a supermarket and pretend to be keen to buy.

What else have you got planned in Shanghai?

About Alan Tan

I'm a medical doctor by profession, but as with all inquiring minds, technology has become an addiction. I'm also constantly in awe of all kinds of tech, from a piece of Velcro to the latest diving computer. Constantly adapting new tech to my lifestyle is a priority. Being a faithful follower of the "MacGyver concept", any tech is useful tech if you use it the right way. I use tech to plug my deficiencies, enhance my capabilities and explore all possibilities. What tech would you like to use today?
