Malaysia's technology-free holidays

Most of us swim in technology on a daily basis. It's omnipotent. I'm not referring to all of us being members of the church of scientology, but I believe that if you're reading this and I'm writing this, we're quite involved in technology. I was recently in Sarawak for a couple of days, traversing Kuching > Sibu > Miri. Technology, by far, is NOT A BIG THING. What do I mean by it not being a big thing? Things are old there. Somehow, the towns don't radiate modernity, don't radiate evidence of technology. There's just no "umph" that technology is taking a hold there.

For those who savor a natural lifestyle, it's a great place to be, I suppose. A holiday from technology.

A short walk around the town area brought back the basics of life. CRT television sets, transistor radios. I don't know where they got such things from, but it was like a blast from the past. I suppose things don't get replaced so quickly if you're in a sleepy town.

This is a picture of the town in Sibu Sarawak. Really slow-going town. Population circa 200,000. Small. Great place to go to miss technology.

Considering the relative lack of shiny new gadgets in Sarawak, for anyone seeking time away from the rat race, this is the place to be. Great tours into the jungles and longhouses of the native tribal areas. Lime stone pinnacles of the Mulu Caves. Diving off of offshore oil platforms, etc.

Ah, lazy, tech-free holidays away from the constant buzz of phones, clatter of computer keyboards, hum of fax machines, chatter of printers and blasts from the TV box. Just... quiet.

Looking at the picture it doesn't look tech-free at all. Going to a place without technology. It looks like interesting experience.

About Alan Tan

I'm a medical doctor by profession, but as with all inquiring minds, technology has become an addiction. I'm also constantly in awe of all kinds of tech, from a piece of Velcro to the latest diving computer. Constantly adapting new tech to my lifestyle is a priority. Being a faithful follower of the "MacGyver concept", any tech is useful tech if you use it the right way. I use tech to plug my deficiencies, enhance my capabilities and explore all possibilities. What tech would you like to use today?
