Using Maxis 3G in Singapore; why Wi-Fi when you can connect through your mobile?
Oct 21, 2008 19:51
I've been connecting to the Internet from my hotel room through my mobile. It's great that Maxis provides roaming for data, too. The above is the speed... In comparison to Maxis' own network in Malaysia, Singapore definitely has better speed! Upload speed for 3G is really good. My old results for Maxis at home on 3G are in the link below.

Actually, I'm not really sure where Singapore is covered by HSDPA. Probably only at the Central Business District? Wi-Fi connectivity in Singapore in extremely noticeable. Only thing is you can't really connect as most of the Wi-Fi is, of course (or rather "cost"), paid hotspots.
Wi-Fi may seem to be rather unessential, with most mobiles nowadays having 3G and HSDPA data network capabilities. More so with network data roaming. But it's always about the cost. Wi-Fi pay-per-use seems to be cheaper than data roaming on your mobile network. In your home network all service providers have a flat-fee, unlimited program for mobile broadband use. That's gonna cost less than the occassional cup of overpriced Starbucks coffee every so often while utilizing the "free" Wi-Fi at Starbucks.
So with data roaming, you're free to roam. But when you're out of your home network, like using the Maxis data roaming in Singapore, be prepared to pay S$10.50 per MB!!! So when data roaming, having that overpriced cup of coffee at Starbucks may be cheaper than paying for the mobile phone bill.

Hmm... Singapore is covered with HSDPA everywhere by all 3 telcos with speeds ranging from 14.4mbps to 1mbps. On, Wi-Fi, Singapore's Wireless@SG thing is free, no payment required unless you wanna get better speeds.

Yep.. wireless@SG is available in most public places.. except in my hotel prolly.. goes for HSDPA too.. :(
