The world will keep on turning, technology will push forward and Thai consumers will continue to gobble up the best and latest smartphones, tablets and just about anything that can send, receive or utilize data.
It should come as no surprise that this year the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is looking to start things right as it looks to disambiguate the regulations which govern how foreign entities can take interests in Thai telecommunications companies, an issue which complicated the sale of Shin Corp's assets and put into question the legality of Telenor's interest, DTAC.
Also on the agenda for the NBTC is to finalize plans to distribute the much-fabled 2100MHz for carriers to expand their 3G networks, though there are now talks of carriers looking to utilize this for 4G instead.
The NBTC giveth and the NBTC taketh away... While commercial carriers are anticipating filling the airways with 3G data, government agencies may soon have to forfeit some of their frequencies currently in use, which extend to television and telecoms concession once their terms expire. The plan is to reclaim, update and reallocate. This would finally bring out TV into the digital age and hopefully mean that we'll finally get to see some true HD content.
