My CF angst

You must have read the CNET Review of the SanDisk Sansa e200 series MP3 players, especially the e250 model.

It has online subscription compatibility, it is an FM tuner/recorder that can also handle voice recording. Besides, it acts as a compact photo and video playback device.

More beautifully, it has a maximum base capacity of 8GB. If that isn't enough, you now have the microSD slot to expand your memory. That easily makes it one of the more competitively priced high-capacity flash players in town.

But why a microSD expansion slot? Why not a CF (CompactFlash) that SanDisk is renowned for in flash memory? That's my angst.

Having migrated to shooting RAW on a 10.2-megapixel digital SLR, my old investments made four years ago in lower-capacity CF cards are now redundant. A 128MB CF card can now store me only eight images, and the 256MB card about 21 shots.

I now use one piece of 2GB and 1GB CF card each, with a high-speed portable storage device for more backup.
I was thinking if there's an MP3 player manufacturer out there who makes CF as the de facto expansion slot, my old CF cards will instantly be turned into individual selection albums of my favorite singers.

But then, you have this theory called "planned product obsolescence" in marketing lessons. It makes you the loser for being an early adopter of technology.

About Jeff Ooi

Jeff Ooi is an Internet and e-Business consultant based in Kuala Lumpur who's spent the last four years blogging internationally on the tech scene, on anything and nothing. Which doesn't really explain why most of his own technology is about three years out of date. He doesn't even own a PDA after his Palm V crashed. He's on 3G, though... Lemak Lemang refers to coconut-flavored sticky rice stuffed in a bamboo container.
