Blooks from Malaysia

You may see we are moving backwards from Web 2.0 to its older version. But three blooks have so far emerged in Malaysia in the last few months.

OK, explain blooks. Simplistically, blooks are book versions of blogs. It was a word coined to mean "looks like a book", but the tireless American blogger, Jeff Jarvis, whom I met several times in the US, later defined it to mean "blogs as books". You can view his documentation on blooks, here.

The latest blook is by journo-blogger A. Kadir Jasin, a.k.a. The Scribe. Titled "Blogger", Kadir's blook is a compilation of his blog archive materials written in English and Malay.

Blook efforts in Malaysia before this were essentially catering to the Malay-speaking audience. It was pioneered by Azalan Hussien, also known by his pen name "Sinaganaga", who first published it in 2005 a blook titled: Jiwa Kacau (Clouded Mind).

Prepaid users: SIM cards issued no longer reflect market share

With the registration exercise for all prepaid mobile phone users having concluded on December 15, network operators can no longer use the number of SIM cards issued as an indicator for their market share.

While the tally is being finalized by regulator Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the minister in charge of the industry has gone on record by saying that some 90 percent, or 17.8 million, of prepaid users have complied with the registration exercise.

With the lower prepaid subscriber base, it also means the current calculation of mobile penetration in the country, currently standing at 85 percent, will have to be revised.

As at 2006, there were about 18.5 million prepaid users based on the number of SIM cards issued, and not actual subscribers.

Switching numbers: Is it for real?

The idea of portability of mobile phone numbers is making the rounds again after three years of hearsay.

After several false starts in announcing the implementation of Mobile Number Portability (MNP)--where mobile users can switch network providers without changing their phone numbers--Energy, Water and Communications Minister Dr Lim Keng Yaik said the facility will be implemented by June.

The minister also said the MNP implementation will be managed by an "independent third party". Though many names with international links have been heard as potential contenders, thus far there has been no public tender called to determine the independent manager.

About Jeff Ooi

Jeff Ooi is an Internet and e-Business consultant based in Kuala Lumpur who's spent the last four years blogging internationally on the tech scene, on anything and nothing. Which doesn't really explain why most of his own technology is about three years out of date. He doesn't even own a PDA after his Palm V crashed. He's on 3G, though... Lemak Lemang refers to coconut-flavored sticky rice stuffed in a bamboo container.
