Is it possible to leave Facebook and not come back?

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine announced on Facebook that he was leaving Facebook. He isn't an employee of the organisation that will soon make its IPO, but rather, a regular user, just like you and I.

By leaving, he meant that he would be deactivating his user profile and won't be logging in anymore. He wouldn't be posting ironic status updates, cute kitten videos or commenting on my whines.

His announcement stunned many and we tried to dissuade him through email and Facebook comments. But my friend was firm on his stance.

"It's taking too much of my time," he said. "I've become unproductive." And that, was that. Before we knew it, he'd left.

His departure left a hole in our cyberworld as he'd always been one to amuse with insightful commentaries of life passing by.

Lo and behold, three weeks later, he was back! I was among the first to spot his comeback status message. Could this be real?

He humbly responded, "It's real. I've since discovered that it's impossible to leave. There're people whom I need to get in touch with, and I need to contact them via Facebook."

Our journey in the cyberworld and sharing of daily observations continued.

Which bring me to my question: Do you think it is possible to leave Facebook permanently, or is that just a myth?

I will let you know at the end of the week. I deactivated my account this morning. Like your friend, I felt I had become unproductive and FB was becoming too time consuming. I hope to keep up with my friends the old fashion way - Phone and E-mail.
