Facebook changes homepage feed
Oct 24, 2009 13:13I was surprised this morning to see that my Facebook page ((http://www.facebook.com/jerryliao)) was cluttered with updates from my friends. Updates like new friends, tagged pictures and more. Practically all friends' updates are displayed in the main column. What happen?
I tried checking the Web, only to find out that Facebook had revamped its homepage feed. Facebook moved the Highlights from the right-hand side to the News Feed view in the main column. Now, why would Facebook do such a thing?
Why would I want to know who my friends added as friends? Or what pictures they tagged, what groups they joined? To me, these are low-quality information that I don't want displayed on my main column.
Another problem, due to the overload of information, is that I would miss a lot of updates from my friends--the high-quality posts, that is. Due to Facebook's way of displaying messages where new postings will be posted first, new postings will be replaced with unwanted updates much faster.
But as one of my friends told me, Facebook is free, so who are we to complain? It can do whatever it wants on its page and we simply have to swallow the changes. I think this would be a challenge for social-networking sites like Facebook--to balance usability with user satisfaction.
God bless us all!
