Google Chrome OS challenges Windows 7, while Microsoft Gazelle takes on Google Chrome browser
Jul 8, 2009 16:58The fight between Google and Microsoft is heating up after Google announced its intention to enter the OS market via Google Chrome. Yes, Chrome, which started as a browser, is now also an OS.
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at Netbooks. Chrome OS will feature speed, simplicity and security.
Don't confuse the Chrome OS from the Android OS, both of which are from Google. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the Web and is designed to power computers ranging from small Netbooks to full-size desktop systems. Android was designed to work across a variety of devices, from phones to settop boxes and Netbooks.
So you may wonder why the rush from Google? Microsoft is set to announce that Windows 7 is ready for RTM (release to marketing), which means Windows 7 will be released to manufacturers to bundle into future versions of their hardware products.
But Microsoft has something up its sleeve as well. The company is working on a project called "Gazelle", a browser that comes with new architecture, has a multi-principal operating system constructed in such a way that provides the browser-based OS exclusive control to manage the protection of all system resources.
The project made by the Microsoft team clearly shows where browser technology is heading to. Further test will indicate whether the new browser technology can be used to develop future browsers and perhaps be implemented or embedded as part of Internet Explorer (IE8).
So who will win this battle? The one that gives its partners the biggest opportunity to increase their sales will win. While Google and Microsoft are battling it out for Web dominance, it will actually be their partners (hardware manufacturers) and customers who will determine the victor here. Simply put, hardware makers will look for business opportunities, while consumers will look at the product features more than anything else. Partners, because they will be the one selling the hardware. So these partners will side with the OS that will make their hardware work better and sell better. The customers, because they will dictate their preference via their user experience.
The company which can capture both the hardware makers and the users will emerge as the victor in this Web domination battle.
I love it when we have this kind of competition. Why? Because at the end of the day, it will be us users who will benefit most from this. So keep it coming, boys.
God bless us all!

Yup Jerry as you rightly pointed out the "Gazelle" project seems very promising and looks like the browsers are headed the OS way... Only time will tell.

@jsbi: it would be interesting to see how this will develop. But I do hope they will quick about this. Other players like Firefox, Opera, and Safari are catching up. Plus the battleground is fast shifting to mobile. Thanks.
