First A(H1N1) incident in Philippines confirmed
May 21, 2009 23:39Department of Health Secretary Francisco Duque has confirmed that the Philippines is now included in the list of countries with the A(H1N1) virus.
A 10-year-old girl who flew in with her parents last May 18, 2009 (Monday), is the first case of A(H1N1) in the Philippines, said Duque.
The girl was able to pass through the thermal scanner. She started having a fever on May 19, 2009, with a cough and sore throat. Her parents brought the girl to the hospital and after thorough examinations made by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), the girl was confirmed to be suffering from the virus.
Is this a case of technology failing mankind? Not really. Everyone knows that thermal scanners are not reliable given the nature of the A(H1N1) virus--that it will take a number of day before a victim will have fever.
The girl was given the necessary medication and is reportedly responding well. The fever has subsided, with no more coughing. But the girl is still suffering from a sore throat. Members of her family were also given medicine to prevent the virus from spreading. The family was also advised to stay at home in the meantime.
Because of this, parents are requesting that the opening of classes be delayed for a month. The proposal is being discussed and a decision will be announced soon.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) is worried that the A(H1N1) virus has mutated and that the possibility of a second wave of outbreak is highly possible. WHO added that the new virus will be stronger and even harder to cure.
Let's all take the necessary precautions. Be alert always. And most of all, pray and seek the mighty healing hands of the Lord.
God bless us all!
