Creativity without limits
Apr 13, 2009 21:01More often than not, people with disorders are viewed by some as different, and are often treated differently as well. People also tend to downplay their capabilities at performing tasks. Autism is one such disorder.
Autism (sometimes called "classical autism") is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and non-verbal communication, and unusual, repetitive or severely limited activities and interests.
Professional advertising photographer John Chua recently conducted a free photography workshop for the members of the Autism Society Philippines (ASP). The workshops, held in scenic places like the Manila Zoo and Manila Ocean Park, became a venue for the children to develop their hidden talents. What Chua did was to urge parents to get their children involved in photography, which became a means through which families of children with autism could spend meaningful bonding time.
ASP and Chua tapped Canon Marketing Philippines Inc. for the workshop and exhibit. The children needed proper equipment, so they approached the Japanese company to provide the digital cameras and printers needed to carry out their agenda.
In a hats off to Canon for the charitable move, it donated 10 PowerShot A470 shooters and one Selphy CP760 inkbox to ASP's office so it could continuous to encourage these autistic children to engage in photography. Canon president and CEO Ramon Arteficio gave praise to the workshop, adding that "we believe in what John Chua and the Autism Society Philippines are doing. There seems to be an invisible barrier between us and the world of children with autism. We want to help break that barrier".
With this project, photography has been transformed into a means for families to connect to the lives of children with autism. This time, there won't be any walls or barriers, only generously opened windows and doors.
God bless us all!

Kudos to John Chua, ASP and Canon for giving the autistic children the opportunity to express in photography what they cannot in words. It would be interesting to see what these children see through the camera.

I think it's a great idea. helping to see into the eyes of autistic children. Art is the only one medium where is everyone equal in terms of creativity.
