1GHz smartphone from Toshiba

The battle is really on, after Acer, Lenovo and Dell made clear their intentions to enter the smartphone market. Toshiba surprised everyone by announcing its own smartphone offering, the Toshiba TG01. And it's no ordinary smartphone, it's a smartphone using Snapdragon.

So what is Snapdragon? Snapdragon is a new processor from Qualcomm that is supposed to be running at 1GHz. Now, I call that power.

According to a press release, the TG01 comes with a 4.1-inch 800 × 480 WVGA touchscreen, is 9.9mm thick, offers HSDPA, GPS, Wi-Fi, and is running on Windows Mobile 6.1.

Just like any mobile device, the battleground will be in the area of processing power, memory, size, weight, screen size, and how seamless it all works together with the operating system. User satisfaction will be very important here.

Next would be the availability of software applications. Users should be able to get (whether for free or not) the applications they need. The more software developers who support the device, the better for the hardware. No software is like having a car without gas.

Again, I do hope these PC makers are making the right moves. I hate to see them fail because, as I've said in my previous article, this is not the right time to experiment. Every cent counts in this time of crisis. Good luck.

God bless us all!
