New mobile power with Intel Centrino 2

Notebooks equipped with the new Intel Centrino 2 (Montevina) were paraded to us media people during the launch of the new mobile chip. I just can't believe the number of notebooks that were shown to us. As a journalist, I was surprised to see big brands like Acer, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, NEO and others displaying their latest offerings supporting Centrino 2, what more the buying public? The options keep growing and growing.

Anyway, the Intel Centrino 2 processor technology for mobile computing is made up of a dual-core processor, chipset, and integrated wireless designed together for outstanding performance, amazing battery life and faster, broader wireless.

New features:

  • Up to 50 percent faster performance when multitasking

  • Up to 2x greater range and up to 5x better wireless performance

  • Designed for the longest possible battery life

  • Up to 90 percent faster performance on intensive multimedia applications like HD video encoding

During the demonstration, the Intel folks launched numerous applications like gaming, Adobe Photoshop, Elements, and played some movies, and we hardly noticed any slowdown or lag.

After the launch, I approached the computer myself and tried playing the gaming while the other applications were still running, and I can say the game works as if it's the only application running at that time.

The price range of notebooks here in the Philippines that use Centrino 2 go from 45,000 pesos to as high as 80,000 pesos. Price varies depending on the components attached to the notebook, I guess.

The line separating between desktop computers and notebook computers is getting thinner and thinner. Computing power going mobile is one exciting development that I want to see in the sub-notebook category soon.

God bless us all!
